Jack Ryan: Ghost War Movie Can’t Make Up for Disappointing TV Finale

As a big fan of action thrillers, I was really bummed to hear that Jack Ryan isn’t getting another season on Prime Video. It’s a shame, but at least they’re releasing a movie to wrap things up, so it’s not a complete goodbye to the franchise.

I was really excited to see John Krasinski direct and star in a Jack Ryan movie, but honestly, I’m a little disappointed there won’t be a fifth season of the show. It feels like his story deserved more time to develop. This Ghost War movie is cool, but it’s basically like getting just two or three episodes worth of content instead of a full season, and that’s a bit of a letdown.

John Krasinski will return for the new movie, along with Wendell Pierce, Michael Kelly, and Betty Gabriel, all reprising their roles from the original series. Prime Video will release Jack Ryan: Ghost War on May 20, 2026, as another action thriller available directly on their streaming service. It’s currently unknown if the film will also be shown in movie theaters.

Everyone expects Ghost War to be a hit on Prime Video, but it’s unclear if it can compensate for the disappointing conclusion of Jack Ryan. The series really needed a fifth season to be considered one of the best ever, despite the new movie continuation.

Jack Ryan Needed Season 5 To Cement Its Status As An All-Time Great Action Thriller Series

For years, fans loved Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan – especially its early seasons on Prime Video. The show successfully updated a classic action series for modern streaming, offering both exciting action sequences and realistic characters involved in complex international conflicts.

However, the show’s fourth season, released in 2023, disappointed many fans. Although critics generally liked it – giving it the highest Rotten Tomatoes score of any season – viewers didn’t respond as positively as they had to previous seasons.

The storyline felt disjointed and confusing, and the development of Jack Ryan’s character lacked depth. The season ended on a disappointing note, and the fact that it only had six episodes—two less than previous seasons—didn’t improve things.

The problems with season four of Jack Ryan feel even more significant now that it’s been announced as the show’s finale. With Jack Ryan: Ghost War on its way, a return for more episodes doesn’t seem likely anytime soon.

It’s really disappointing that such a popular and influential series would end on such a weak note. The finale is particularly frustrating because it focuses on Jack needing to be rescued from a torture scene that’s quickly brushed aside, and then follows it up with a predictable and overused bomb defusal plot. It just feels unforgivable.

The series Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan was initially a huge success for Prime Video and seemed likely to be considered the best adaptation of Clancy’s books. However, the way the show concluded will always overshadow that achievement, even if the new series, Jack Ryan: Ghost War, is well-received.

Prime Video’s Upcoming Jack Ryan Movie Takes The Franchise In A Different Direction

The first Jack Ryan movie on Prime Video is definitely changing things up for the series. John Krasinski returns as Jack Ryan, but this time he’s older and more worn down, and this version of the character will feel different from the one we’ve seen over the past four seasons.

There’s a chance the next Jack Ryan installment could be shown in movie theaters as well as on Prime Video. Separately, Amazon MGM Studios was also working on a spin-off series starring Michael Peña as Domingo “Ding” Chavez, a character who was a highlight of the fourth season of the original show, despite its overall weaknesses.

Ultimately, shifting to new stories, formats, and characters is a good decision for the future of the series. However, it’s hard to shake the feeling that Jack Ryan deserved a more conclusive ending.
