Initially, Jack Black wasn’t planned to portray the same character in “A Minecraft Movie” that he eventually did; instead, he was intended to play a very distinct role.
In contrast to games like Fallout and The Last of Us, which follow a predetermined narrative, Minecraft stands out as it does not rely on a central plot for gameplay. Instead, players are given the freedom to create their own experiences by crafting and exploring their unique worlds.
Consequently, Mojang Studios has given director Jared Hess the freedom to be imaginative, leading to the long-awaited release of a Minecraft film in cinemas starting from April.
The ensemble features Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and prominently, Jack Black, portraying the central character in this game – however, initially, this wasn’t part of the original casting scheme.
Jack Black was supposed to play a talking pig in A Minecraft Movie
In a Minecraft film, the role of Steve will be played by Black, but during much of the production process, his character was originally designed as a conversing pig.
According to Torfi Frans Ólafsson, Mojang’s senior director of original content, the character was initially designed as a chatterbox pig. It wasn’t until much later in the development process that they decided to change it into Steve, as they required an expert and host for their project, as explained to Variety.
The plot of this movie seems to invite some discussion. Initially, it presents a group of oddball characters who find themselves stuck in the Overworld, where they encounter Steve, a skilled artisan who could potentially assist them in their quest to return to our world.
Fans are wondering how the transition was made from a character like a talking pig to Michael B. Jordan portraying Steve, who seems to be a key figure in the movie. This is the question on everyone’s mind.
User’s comment: “It seems like this film underwent some incredibly unusual development and revisions in its script, which is a massive shift.”
Another user’s comment: “Initially, Jack Black was intended to voice a talking pig? The reasoning behind this movie becomes more bizarre with each passing day.
“One person humorously requested a detailed day-by-day breakdown of the evolution of the Disaster Artist technique,” another quipped, while a third questioned, “Why on earth would they openly confess to this? It’s mind-bogglingly foolish!
Jack Black went “method” as Steve in Minecraft
Ólafsson also stressed, “This is not my Steve or your Steve – this is Jack Black’s Steve.
Many viewers were quick to recognize that the initial previews featured none other than Jack Black, rather than him portraying another character. However, it could very well be Jack Black embodying a role and expressing his unique interpretation of it.
In their spare moments between takes, Black spent over 100 hours immersed in the pixelated world of Minecraft alongside the cast and team during filming.
Or, During breaks on set, Black clocked up more than 100 hours of Minecraft playtime with the cast and crew while the cameras rolled.
Ólafsson stated that the character was excessively enthusiastic, amassing items within the mines due to his fascination with lapis lazuli for its unique sound. He continually inquired, “May I discuss lapis lazuli in the film?”
Or, in a more conversational tone:
Ólafsson mentioned that the character was quite eccentric, stockpiling items in the mines due to his obsession with lapis lazuli because of its distinctive sound. He repeatedly asked if he could talk about it in the movie.
In an interview with IGN, Hess playfully commented that Black immersed himself deeply into his role, often staying in his trailer during breaks and delivering exceptional performances in the game’s open world.
or
During a conversation with IGN, Hess humorously pointed out that Black took his acting to an intense level. He spent most of his downtime in his trailer and consistently gave impressive performances in the Overworld.
Torfi set up a unique server exclusively for the team members. Jack became fixated on finding lapis lazuli, which he refers to as such. Essentially, I’d drop by in the morning to discuss the day’s scene and there he’d be, dressed as Steve engrossed in the game. It was quite an unusual sight, he noted.
