Jack Black Sings My Chemical Romance Parody About a Goth Kid on Vacation on ‘SNL’: ‘I Stayed in the Room With My Graphic Novels So I Could Masturbate’

On “Saturday Night Live,” Jack Black, Kenan Thompson, and Ego Nwodim combined forces to create a humorous reggae rendition that spoofed My Chemical Romance‘s song “Welcome to the Black Parade.” This musical skit poked fun at the peculiar behavior of gothic youth while on vacation.

Wearing an over-the-top gothic outfit, adorned with striking eyeliner and a black wig, Black sang the lyrics, “As a young lad, my parents led me to Jamaica for my high school’s spring break. They suggested the pool, but I preferred staying in our room, engrossed in my graphic novels, rather than joining them.” In essence, he chose solitude and reading over swimming during his vacation.

The tune initially featured a lone reggae rhythm, as Thompson and Nwodim portrayed Jamaicans, crooning the lyrics, “In times of conflict, hardship, and anguish, / How can our hearts find happiness once more? / We gaze, we chuckle at / A gothic youth on holiday.”

(The aim here is to maintain the same meaning but present it in a slightly different way for readability and natural flow.)

Michael Longfellow, portraying the title character as a gothic teenager, stands out from his cheerful family in photographs. He dons combat boots on the sandy beach, and once, his long coat becomes entangled in a hammock. Moreover, he paints his fingernails black.
