Jack Black Is Having ‘Night Terrors’ Ahead of Hosting ‘Saturday Night Live’ for the First Time in 20 Years: ‘I Was on That Show’ Before Some Cast Members ‘Were Born’

For the first time in almost two decades, Jack Black will be the host of “Saturday Night Live” on April 5, an event that has been keeping him awake at night.

On Sunday, the multitalented entertainer visited London for the premiere of “A Minecraft Movie.” Later in the week, he entered the writers’ room for “SNL,” expressing excitement about revisiting Studio 8H after a gap of nearly 20 years. You heard it correctly; his last hosting stint was on December 17, 2005, where he promoted Peter Jackson’s “King Kong.

Inquired about his preparations for the upcoming week, Black replied: “Well, just to let you know, I’ve been having a lot of disturbing dreams and night terrors, as well as vivid recollections resurfacing. It’s quite wild, extremely thrilling.

He went on to explain that he’s unsure where his sketches might lead, since this is typical for the quick-tempo program. “As you can imagine,” Black commented about the “SNL” crew, “they’re still in a sort of daze from last night’s show.” He suggested that some of them might be brainstorming ideas, but he thinks it’s one of those episodes where they pull together material within a week, which adds to the thrill.

Black expressed his affection for “everyone” currently on the Saturday Night Live team, noting that he refers to them as “kids” because he was part of the show before some of them were even born, with the exception of Kenan Thompson, who is approximately the same age. That’s basically it.

Apart from his hosting stint in 2005, Black has also served as host for “Saturday Night Live” on two other occasions, specifically in 2002 and 2003. In this upcoming instance, Black will be promoting a film titled “A Minecraft Movie,” which is slated for release on April 4th. In the movie, Black portrays an expert craftsman named Steve, who is directed by his collaborator from “Nacho Libre,” Jared Hess. The story revolves around Steve and a group of oddball companions, including Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and newcomer Sebastian Hansen, who find themselves transported into the game’s Overworld when they are all of a sudden sucked in.

Before landing the part, Black had informed EbMaster that he was acquainted with the game. “Indeed, I’ve played Minecraft a bit,” he admitted. “I wouldn’t consider myself an expert, but I can navigate within a Minecraft world fairly well.

In the movie, Black not only uses his acting skills but also showcases his musical talent by singing an original track titled “I Feel Alive.” This song was jointly composed by him, along with Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt.

Black expressed great enthusiasm about that specific track, noting that it includes Dave Grohl on drums. “Cale [Boyter], our producer, suggested we needed a powerful song to conclude the film,” Black recalled. Initially, Black stated he couldn’t compose a song that encapsulated the entire movie. However, he proposed, “Perhaps if you could get in touch with those musicians who created ‘I’m Just Ken,’ they might be able to accomplish it.” To which Boyter replied, “Done!” and made it happen.

Black went on, expressing, “I exclaimed, ‘You’ve got to be joking!’ Then we began collaborating, and I thought, ‘This is divine!’

“A Minecraft Movie” releases in theaters on April 4 via Warner Bros. Pictures.
