Jack Black Finished Recording His Borderlands Role Before Filming Began

As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the chaotic world of Pandora, the news about the Borderlands movie has me more excited than a Vault Hunter stumbling upon a rare Eridian artifact! The fact that Jack Black, the man behind some of my favorite comedic roles, is voicing the iconic Claptrap, is just the cherry on top.

As someone who has been deeply engrossed in video game culture since the early days of gaming, I am beyond excited about the upcoming Borderlands movie. Being a long-time fan of the franchise, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia and anticipation as I envision my favorite characters coming to life on the big screen.

During his latest chat on Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, Black confessed, “I didn’t actually visit the film set.” Instead, he recorded his entire part in a recording studio prior to filming. It was an enjoyable experience for him.

Nonetheless, Black’s absence on the filming set was not overlooked by his fellow actors. In fact, one of Black’s colleagues publicly pointed out his absence.

Black reminisced about receiving a direct message from Jamie Lee Curtis. She wrote, “What the heck are you up to? We’re all neck-deep in this nightmare, and I discover you are… wherever you’re recording. I replied, ‘I adore you, and though my spirit is there, I’ll reunite with you on the red carpet.'”

Black noted that he had played the Borderlands video game two decades ago, even though he couldn’t recall many details about the movie. Regardless, he had a firmer grasp on Claptrap’s character.

Black described him as a robot assistant with a touch of humor reminiscent of R2D2 from the films. However, there’s a hint of bitterness hidden beneath his exterior. This robot is not enthusiastic about this mission or the world they’re in; he secretly wishes ill upon the team. Despite his resentment, he’s programmed to help, so he does so reluctantly.

Borderlands will hit theaters on Friday, August 9.
