Actor J.K. Simmons has been confirmed to star in the MGM+ drama series titled “The Westies,” which has recently received an official green light for production.
The development of the show was initially announced in March 2025. This intriguing series comes from creators Chris Brancato and Michael Panes. It’s inspired by the real-life story of a notorious New York City gang, sharing the same name as its title. The official description for the series goes as follows:
The story unfolds in the early ’80s when the construction of the Jacob Javitz Convention Center on the Westies’ territory in Hell’s Kitchen offers a lucrative opportunity. Though vastly outnumbered by the Five Italian Mafia Families, the Westies’ reputation for savagery and intelligence lets them share the profits through a delicate truce. However, tension between the headstrong young members and traditional leaders could ignite this volatile situation, leading the Westies into deeper involvement with the FBI’s ongoing probe of the Italian mafia.
In the role of Eamon Sweeney, Simmons will be portrayed as a captivating yet merciless figure who leads The Westies. His vintage allure and strong ties to his community conceal a ruthless criminal intent and cold-blooded violence.
Brancato stated, ‘J.K. Simmons doesn’t merely portray authority; he exudes it. We’re fortunate to have a performer capable of delivering the weightiness and menace required by this realm.’
J.K. Simmons is one of the most talented actors currently active,” stated Michael Wright, head of MGM+. “His genuine and powerful performance adds a priceless element to this intricate and thrilling tale, and we’re eagerly anticipating his portrayal of this indelible character.
Simmons boasts a varied TV background with appearances on series such as “Oz,” “Counterpart,” “The Closer,” and “Goliath.” His talents extend to voice acting, where he’s currently featured in the Amazon series “Invincible” and playing a key role in the popular series “The Legend of Korra,” among other voice-over projects. In cinema, Simmons has garnered recognition, winning an Academy Award and Golden Globe for best supporting actor in “Whiplash.” He’s also been nominated for an Oscar for his performance in “Being the Ricardos.” Beyond these, he’s well-known for roles in the “Spider-Man” film series, as well as movies like “The Accountant,” its sequel “The Accountant 2,” “Juno,” and “La La Land.
He is repped by Gersh.
Filming for “The Westies” commences in Toronto during July. Besides collaborating on its creation, Brancato assumes roles as executive producer and head of production (showrunner) for this series, all under his TV contract with MGM+.
