„I’ve Never Hit Anyone in My Whole Life”. Although Val Kilmer Wouldn't Hurt a Fly, He Proved Himself in a Brutal Role That Was Offered to Keanu Reeves

As a huge fan of Val Kilmer’s acting career, I’ve always been in awe of his ability to take on diverse roles and bring each character to life so convincingly. His refusal to be pigeonholed into one type of character is truly inspiring.

Val Kilmer demonstrated versatility in acting by assuming various multifaceted roles without being pigeonholed into a particular character type. He skillfully portrayed both virtuous and malevolent figures. Interestingly, his personal convictions didn’t hinder him from accepting these diverse parts. However, he acknowledged that one role presented an unusually challenging experience for him due to its stark contrast with his own beliefs.

Chris Shiherlis, the role he brought to life in Michael Mann’s “Heat,” saw Kilmer acting alongside Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. In this production, Kilmer portrayed a fiery and violent character. During an interview with Deadline, he disclosed that he had to find ways to prepare himself for portraying a character who resorts to violence, as this was a new experience for him since “he had never laid a hand on anyone in his entire life.”

I don’t have any experience with violence whatsoever. In my entire life, I haven’t laid a hand on anyone, not even in self-defense or during an argument. However, I have managed to intervene and stop some fights from escalating. But when it came to Chris, I had to figure out what specific actions would make him so enraged that he would be driven to commit murder. It was a complex and challenging task for me.

Although Chris and Kilmer looked nothing alike, Kilmer effectively portrayed the required brutality for the Heat character.

It’s intriguing that the role of this character was initially intended for Keanu Reeves. Unfortunately, he couldn’t make it to the project as he had previously agreed to take on Hamlet, leaving him unable to join Michael Mann’s Heat cast. Nonetheless, the production team was fortunate enough to secure Val Kilmer instead. Despite being a gentle soul in real life, Kilmer put in an impressive performance and demonstrated his capacity for brutality on screen.
