It’s Video Game Month (In One City)

In June, there’s a plethora of festivities underway, such as Pride Month, Men’s Health Month, ALS Awareness Month, and Black Music Month, to name a few. Now, another celebration can be included: Video Game Month. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow has announced June as Video Game Month in Toronto this week. This declaration honors video games while also recognizing the talented Canadian studios and developers who contribute to the industry.

From June 7th onwards, I’ll be diving headfirst into a gaming extravaganza here in Toronto! The city has got more than 40 events lined up, from major esports tournaments and expert gatherings to shining the spotlight on independent games and demos. Best part? Most of these events are free for everyone to attend, so you can come join me in experiencing, playing around, and networking with Toronto’s vibrant gaming community and digital scene!

Toronto’s video game industry showcases the very essence of our city – it’s innovative, varied, and visionary,” Chow stated in a release. “Video Game Month serves as an opportunity to commend this thriving field and its gifted contributors, while also exploring how gaming intertwines with art, advancements, and our local neighborhoods.

Over the next few weeks, you’ll notice a significant happening in our city: Riot Games will be organizing a Valorant Masters tournament from June 7th to the 22nd. The city anticipates that this event will feature artistic installations and charitable initiatives, potentially drawing over 20,000 spectators and generating an estimated economic impact of $40 million.

Additionally, there’s Toronto Game Week happening from June 12th to June 18th. This event is a citywide celebration of independent video games featuring live-action role-playing, workshops, discussions, and displays.

As a passionate gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to be part of Video Game Month – an initiative that resonates deeply with my values. Established to complement two other strategic city projects, this event aims to foster innovation, generate quality employment opportunities, and celebrate the richly diverse creative industrial landscape that makes Toronto stand out. It’s a celebration of our city’s unique identity as a hub for gaming creativity!

June marks a significant period in the gaming world, as it hosts the debut of Switch 2 and Summer Game Fest (alongside related events). This month-long extravaganza represents the largest video game celebration, with March 10 known as Mario Day and February 2 recognized as Hedgehog Day for Sonic enthusiasts.
