It’s Official: Ventana Sur 2024 Relocates to Montevideo, Uruguay

As a fervent admirer of the Latin American film industry and its dynamic growth over the past decade, I am thrilled to share my perspective on this groundbreaking announcement regarding Ventana Sur’s move from Buenos Aires to Montevideo, Uruguay.

The long-awaited confirmation has been made: Ventana Sur’s organizers announced on Wednesday that the 16th installment of this renowned event will be held in Montevideo, Uruguay’s capital city, from December 2-6, 2024.

The new agreement signed by the Cannes Film Market, the Cannes Festival, Argentina’s INCAA and ACAU, and Uruguayan film-TV agencies marks a departure from the first 15 years of Ventana Sur, which previously took place in Buenos Aires and began in 2009.

In a press release, the Ventana Sur team announced that Uruguay will be the site of this year’s event. This offers a special chance for Uruguay to welcome important figures from the global audiovisual sector.

Based on my experience working in the media industry, I strongly believe that Uruguay is increasingly becoming a significant player in Latin America’s audiovisual sector. This belief is reinforced by the country’s strategic policies geared towards sector development, which have led to robust growth and recognition of its artistic and technical talent on the global stage. Moreover, Uruguay’s extensive experience in producing both national and international works speaks volumes about its expertise and commitment to excellence in this field. As someone who has closely observed the media landscape in Latin America, I am genuinely impressed by Uruguay’s achievements and believe that its influence will only continue to grow in the future.

Organized by the Marché du Film, Cannes Festival and Argentina’s ICAA and channelling the huge caché, contacts and expertise of Cannes, the first Ventana Sur caught a Latin America industry already galvanised by soaring public-sector incentives looking for international sales and production partners.

As a dedicated fan, I’ve noticed how the event hasn’t stayed stagnant but rather expanded its horizons in pursuit of international movie growth. By introducing new initiatives like Blood Window and Animation! Showcase for genre films and co-production meet Proyecta, not to mention the SoloSeries TV division, it continues to push boundaries and bring fresh perspectives to the table.

An Argentinean event is facing several challenges. Inflation is running rampant, INCAAs financing is dwindling throughout the year, and Javier Milei’s administration is intent on reducing INCAAs budget.

The involvement of INCAA as an organizer for Ventana Sur keeps some version of the event running in Buenos Aires.

“Ventana Sur’s newest phase showcases Rio de la Plata’s significance in the worldwide audiovisual sphere and fosters closer connections between Latin American and global film industries. This collaboration is expected to result in fresh partnerships and pioneering initiatives,” Ventana Sur’s organizers shared on Wednesday.

The specifics of the recent situation are still kept confidential. There is a significant possibility that the connection between Argentina’s human resources and Uruguay’s economic resilience, as well as Brazil’s current financial boom, will be explored further.
