‘It’s Not Supposed to Be Nice’: Dandadan Star Opens Up on Momo’s Most ‘Unsettling and Nerve-Wracking’ Scenes

The anime has gained significant popularity, yet it hasn’t been free of debates. In a recent interview, the official English voice actor for Momo, Abby Trott, shed light on her interpretation of Momo’s most contentious scene from the first season of Dandadan.

From the get-go, “Dandadan” sprinted forward with Season 1 of its anime, earning high praise from both viewers and critics. The series often graced Netflix’s top 10 list during its broadcast. However, some viewers found themselves abandoning the anime after a particularly chilling opening scene featuring Momo Ayase, the main character. As the voice actress for Momo in English, Abby Trott shares her insights into such scenes, having discussed her thoughts on them with Aleks Le (Jiji) and AJ Beckles (Okarun) in a recent conversation.

Momo’s English Dub Actor Already Knew Dandadan’s Most Controversial Anime Scene Was Coming

In the first episode of the series, Dandadan, Momo is kidnapped by an extraterrestrial being. Despite her valiant efforts to flee, she’s pursued relentlessly, with her clothing gradually torn away as she fights back. Exhausted and disoriented, Momo faints. When she regains consciousness, she’s bound to a surgical table, only dressed in her undergarments. The alien race then retrieves instruments for what appears to be an invasive examination of Momo, which carries a distinctly sexual connotation.

Momo’s Lowest Moment Was Also the Dandadan Character’s Greatest Source of Power

Despite having prior knowledge of the scene, Trott admits that nothing could fully prepare her for actually experiencing it. She described it as something that remained difficult to watch or act. “The Serpoian scene, in particular, is still a tough one,” she said, referring to it as a challenging time. However, for Trott, the difficulty of this scene was precisely what made it significant. She went on to say, “I believe that’s exactly how it’s intended. It’s not supposed to be pleasant – they’re antagonists. It’s a moment that I understand might discourage some viewers from watching the show, and that makes perfect sense.

Through stark contrasts, I consistently emphasize that people can be as fearsome as monsters. However, as Trott puts it, these dark times are where Momo uncovers her greatest resilience. “For me,” she explains with a chuckle, “it’s in those critical instances that Momo taps into her power – she dives deep into her memories, recalls her grandmother’s wisdom, and unleashes her psychic abilities. It’s a pivotal moment in Momo’s growth, transforming her into quite the formidable character, overcoming adversity.

Momo’s challenges don’t cease with the Serpoians. As Trott hints, Momo will face another dangerous situation when a band of suspicious men locate her at a nearby hot spring. Unlike the Serpoians, this group consists entirely of human males, who have no noble intentions other than to satisfy their darkest and most repugnant urges.

In Season 2, as we recalled from Season 1, we were left on a nerve-wracking cliffhanger – it was quite unsettling seeing Momo in the hot springs with those suspicious characters. Fans have reportedly been anxious about what might happen next to our beloved heroine in Dandadan, but Trott has assured us that we don’t need to worry. He says, “We know Momo is tough, so she’ll definitely take care of those guys.

In the United States, the initial chapters of season 2 titled “Dandadan: Evil Eye,” will be screened in cinemas across the country starting June 6.
