As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for delving into the intricacies of global cinema, I find the launch of Italy’s Adler Entertainment and 39Films‘ Writing Box initiative to be an exhilarating development. The collaboration, spearheaded by industry veterans Marco Colombo, Mattia della Puppa, and Alfredo Federico, promises to foster a fertile ground for the birth of compelling narratives that resonate on the international stage.
Italy’s Adler Entertainment and 39Films have joined forces to establish a groundbreaking idea lab known as Writing Box. This collaborative platform aims to unite Italian and international screenwriters, fostering the growth of potential film scripts, television shows, and documentaries for global distribution.
The upcoming initiative, set to debut at Rome’s MIA market next week, is a creative endeavor conceived by Marco Colombo, Mattia della Puppa, and Alfredo Federico, an Italy-based Argentinian producer who founded 39Films in Italy. Notably, Alfredo Federico has contributed significantly to the Latin American film industry with his work on “Tropa de Elite,” which won the Berlin Golden Bear in 2008, and Guillermo Arriaga’s “The Burning Plain.
Based in Milan, Adler Entertainment is a distributor of independent films like “Immaculate,” which features Sydney Sweeney, and has recently expanded into film production. Some of their produced works include “Mogwai: If the Stars Had a Sound,” a documentary about the cult Scottish band Mogwai that has garnered attention on the festival circuit this year.
Colombo, as depicted in the image, expressed that Adler, being an independent company, will be taking a more proactive approach in production. Instead of just contributing, they plan to take on projects from their very start and retain the intellectual property rights (IP). He also mentioned that writers participating in the Writing Box program would benefit from having immediate access to funding and distribution opportunities.
Another benefit is that the Writing Box mentors include Meg LeFauve, a co-writer of the Oscar-nominated film “Inside Out” who has also written movies like “The Baby Dance,” which deals with adoption themes, and produced “The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys.” Additionally, she served as co-chair of the Graduate Producers Program at UCLA’s School of Film and Television. Joe Forte is another mentor, known for writing Harrison Ford’s thriller “Firewall” and having worked with Jodie Foster, major studios such as Warner Brothers, Sony, Paramount, Fox, Amazon, MGM, and advertising companies like Saatchi & Saatchi.
The inaugural Writing Box program is all set to commence, starting from April 22 to 27, held in the beautiful locale of Tuscany. This event will be carried out in partnership with Nostos Screenwriting Retreats, along with LeFauve and Forte providing their expertise.
Alfredo Federico (shown on the right) highlighted that not only does Writing Box focus on developing internal production projects, but they are also eager to establish collaborations with other Italian film production companies.
Regarding the projects moving through our Writing Box, Mattia della Puppa (pictured on the left) mentioned that they all originate from a fundamental yet essential thought: the quality of the initial intellectual property (IP) is what truly sets production apart, he emphasized.
Below is an initial trio of projects being developed by the Writing Box initiative:
The drama “Azzardo” is based on Alessandra Mureddu’s novel of the same name, published by Einaudi in Italy. It follows a middle-aged woman’s struggle with an addiction to slot machines. Laura Paolucci, known for “My Brilliant Friend” and “Gomorrah,” and Agustina Macri, director of “Soledad,” are the writers behind this compelling story.
“Not a Single Hair,” is a movie that revolves around a band of young anti-fascists who abducted the Spanish deputy consul in Milan during 1962 due to his ties with Francisco Franco. The script was penned by Francesco Trento, Giaime Maccioni, and Marco Cipriani.
“Lella” is a biographical film centering around Lella Lombardi, Italy’s female Formula One driver who remains the only woman to have achieved a top 6 finish in a world championship race. The script is penned by Francesco Trento, Adele Augruso, and Agustina Macri.
