Italian Thriller ‘Vanished Into the Night,’ Starring Annabelle Wallis and Riccardo Scamarcio, Tops Global Netflix Chart

As a passionate supporter of international cinema, I have been thoroughly impressed by the meteoric success of “Vanished Into the Night” on Netflix. Having followed Annabelle Wallis’ career since her days in “Peaky Blinders,” I was already excited to see her in this thriller. But when I learned that she was starring alongside Italian A-lister Riccardo Scamarcio, I knew we were in for a treat.

“Disappeared in the Darkness,” a gripping thriller featuring Annabelle Wallis and Riccardo Scamarcio as ex-spouses in southern Italy, has unexpectedly soared to the summit of Netflix’s international chart following the abduction of their kids for ransom. This achievement is an uncommon feat for an Italian production.

In “Vanished,” I, as an avid fan of Peaky Blinders, was thrilled to see Wallis in the leading role. She portrays Dr. Grace Helen, a U.S. psychiatrist who found solace in Italy’s picturesque Puglia region following a heart-wrenching breakup with Pietro, played by the talented Scamarcio. Tragedy strikes when their estranged children go missing near Bari’s bustling port city. Desperate and driven by his past connections, Pietro reaches out to a dangerous acquaintance in an attempt to rescue his beloved kids.

Renato De Maria’s latest high-end film, titled “Hotel Fear” or “Paz!”, took the top spot on Netflix only a few days after its global release on July 11. This movie currently holds the first position among non-English films in Netflix’s Global Top 10 chart, which covers the period from July 8 to July 14.

Lately, on the seventeenth of last month, I discovered that “Vanished” was the most-watched movie on Netflix, based on the data from streaming analysis company FlixPatrol.

“The film ‘Vanished’ blends the elements of classic noir and family drama, and is based on the Argentinean thriller ‘Seventh Floor’ (Séptimo) by Patxi Amezcua. It is written by skilled Italian screenwriter and novelist Francesca Marciano (‘A Brighter Tomorrow’) and Luca Infascelli (‘The Catholic School’). Giacomo Durzi (‘Baby’) is the production creator.”

I’ve been an avid fan of thriller movies for as long as I can remember. As a child, I would hide under the blankets with my flashlight during late-night viewings of Hitchcock classics. So when I heard that Roberto Sessa, the mastermind behind “The Sea Outside,” is producing a new thriller via his Picomedia label, I was beyond excited.

In a statement to EbMaster, Sessa expressed that leading Netflix’s global rankings is not only a source of immense pride for him but also serves as concrete evidence that the appeal of films transcends language boundaries and hinges on compelling narratives and superior quality.

“Seeing this little film conquer viewers all over the world reaffirms this notion,” Sessa added.
