Italian Drama ‘Nonostante,’ Munich Olympics Massacre Drama ‘September 5’ Set as Venice Horizons and Horizons Extra Openers

As a film enthusiast and someone with a deep appreciation for historical dramas, I am truly thrilled to learn about the opening films of this year’s Venice Film Festival in the Horizons and Horizons Extra sections.

The Italian play “Nonostante” by Valerio Mastandrea, and the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics drama “September 5,” directed by Tim Fehlbaum with Peter Sarsgaard in the cast, have been announced as the opening productions for the innovative Horizons and Horizons Extra sections of the Venice Film Festival.

On September 5, a film produced by Republic Pictures recounts the urgent choices faced by an American sports broadcasting team. They swiftly shifted from sportscasting to live coverage of the crisis involving Israeli athletes being held captive.

“From this unique viewpoint, the term ‘September 5’ offers a fresh and significant interpretation of the worldwide live event that reached approximately one billion viewers as stated in the movie description.”

September 5 is a film jointly produced by BerghausWöbke Filmproduktion and Projected Picture Works from Germany, along with Constantin Film and ERF Edgar Reitz Filmproduktion.

Sean Penn is one of the producers, alongside Philipp Trauer, Thomas Wöbke, Tim Fehlbaum, John Ira Palmer, and John Wildermuth, for the project dated September 5th.

Despite being a quietly living patient myself, my tranquility is disturbed by the entry of a vibrant and agitated newcomer, played and directed by Mastandrea.

Viola Prestieri and Valeria Golino produce the film for HT Film, while Francesco Tatò and Oscar Glioti do so for Damocle. Moreno Zani and Malcom Pagani are involved in production for Tenderstories. RAI Cinema is also a producer. Italian distribution is handled by BiM Distribuzione.

Despite opening the Horizons competition on August 28, September 5 will be the premiere date for Horizons Extra.

The Horizons Extra part is an addition to the regular Horizons segment at the Venice Film Festival, which highlights emerging trends in international cinema. Unlike films in the Horizons category that are evaluated by a jury, presided over this year by Debra Granik of “Winter’s Bone” fame, Horizons Extra entries are assessed based on audience feedback.

I’m thrilled to share that the 81st Venice Film Festival is set to take place from August 28 to September 7. The big reveal of the entire film lineup is scheduled for July 23, so mark your calendars and stay tuned!
