Looking back, it’s not surprising that the author of the unsettling novel The Housemaid has such a unique perspective. Many readers, including myself, were unaware that Freida McFadden wasn’t her author’s real name. USA Today recently revealed, in an exclusive interview on April 8th, that McFadden is actually Sara Cohen, a doctor specializing in brain disorders who also writes bestselling novels.
She wears glasses for both of her characters, Cohen and McFadden, but uses a red wig as part of her disguise simply because she doesn’t know how to do her own hair. McFadden explained she’s frustrated with people questioning if she’s a genuine person or a group of men, and wants to make it clear she has nothing to hide.
Naomi McFadden, who writes under a pen name, always dreamed of earning a doctor’s salary while writing novels that could become movies – and she’s achieved it. She kept her writing identity secret until she could leave her medical job, which she did at the end of 2023, though she still works part-time about once or twice a month. She says the extra income is helpful, especially since she often needs to buy wigs.
