The new horror film ‘Welcome to Derry‘ took years to develop, and the way the story concludes was altered during filming due to a surprising circumstance.

As a huge fan of the It movies, I’m so excited about Welcome to Derry! It’s a prequel, meaning it tells the story of what happened before the events of the two It films we already know and love, and the same awesome team – Andy and Barbara Muschietti – are behind it, which gives me so much hope it’ll be amazing.

The show draws inspiration from Stephen King’s original novel and adds new details about the past. It’s set in 1962, when Pennywise was actively frightening the residents of the town.

The new show ‘Welcome to Derry’ has only aired two of its eight episodes, but viewers are already discussing the finale – what it might lead to, and how the plans for it evolved during filming.

How the Hollywood strikes affected IT: Welcome to Derry

Filming for ‘Welcome to Derry’ began before the writers and actors went on strike in 2023, and only three of the eight episodes were almost finished when production paused. The delay caused by the strike, not any problems with the story or acting, was the main challenge for the show’s creators.

Barbara told SFX Magazine they unexpectedly had to film scenes set in different weather conditions. The show was originally planned to feel like summer, but they ended up needing to create a new ending that fit a completely different climate.

Andy recalls that filming was difficult because the young actors were growing up quickly, their voices were changing, and coordinating everyone’s schedules became a nightmare for the studio.

Barbara Muschietti believes IT ending will “destroy” fans

The TV series unfolds over three seasons, each taking place further in the past. Season 1 is set in 1962, before the main story begins. Season 2 will be set in 1935, and Season 3 even earlier, in 1908.

Andy explained to Collider that the story was intentionally told in reverse order for a specific reason. While Season 1 provides a sense of closure, it also ends with a lingering question. He hinted that this question is introduced in episode eight and will ultimately determine whether viewers will be interested in continuing the story.

Barbara thinks the ending will be devastating for viewers, while Andy describes it as deeply moving.

Andy explained that the emotional impact of the show was greatly increased throughout the writing and production process. He described the ending as very emotional and providing a sense of completion. While fans know the entity IT survives into 1989, he hinted there’s a twist to that knowledge.

The way the story is unfolding – backwards – is connected to a bigger mystery. Things aren’t as they seem in this world, and I can’t explain exactly why. Appearances are deceiving.
