It: Welcome To Derry Episode 3 Recap & Ending Explained

Okay, so after last week’s false alarm, episode 3 of It: Welcome to Derry finally starts to deliver on the creepy promise of Pennywise. We get a proper tease of the clown’s full power, and the show also digs deeper into the mysterious abilities of Dick Hallorann – it’s becoming clear he’s much more than just a kindly face in Derry. It’s a solid step forward, and I’m getting genuinely hooked.

From the very first episode, It: Welcome to Derry has included frightening scenes of Pennywise, who appears as whatever the characters fear most. In episode 2, Pennywise continues to terrorize Dick Hallorann while he uses his psychic ability, called “shine,” to find the creature. But before this, the episode shows a flashback explaining how General Shaw first met the entity as a child.

He eventually left town, but his initial encounter with Pennywise revealed the monster’s power to create and thrive on fear. Meanwhile, the kids in It: Welcome to Derry bravely try to clear Ronnie’s father’s name by finding proof that Pennywise exists. They manage to take several compelling photos and even capture the monster in a terrifying and recognizable form.

Why Pennywise Is In Its Clown Form In Welcome To Derry Episode 3’s Ending

Will takes a photo of Pennywise. Later, when he and his friends review the picture, they see a man dressed as a clown. This introduces the most common appearance of the creature from It: Welcome to Derry. However, it’s important to remember that the clown isn’t Pennywise’s real form. According to Stephen King’s novel, the monster often disguises itself as a clown to attract children. It uses this disguise as bait, luring them close before attacking.

I think we’ll definitely see Pennywise keep showing up as a clown – it’s such a great way to draw Will and his friends in, to make them wonder what’s going on. It’s also fascinating to me that the show might actually explain why Pennywise chose a clown form specifically, maybe even changing parts of the original Stephen King story to do so. I’m really curious to learn more about how that happened and why it wasn’t something else entirely!

Dick Hallorann’s Pennywise Vision Explained

As a huge fan of the story, I always found this part particularly chilling. General Shaw figures out that while Dick Hallorann can feel Pennywise is nearby, he’s having trouble pinpointing exactly where it is. So, Shaw sends him on a plane with Hanlon and another guy, hoping Dick can use his ‘shining’ to get a better fix on Pennywise’s location. Unfortunately, while they’re flying, Dick does connect with Pennywise, but it’s a terrible connection. It’s like he’s psychically pulled down into the sewers of Derry, and he experiences this horrifying vision of all the past victims floating around. It’s a really unsettling moment, showing just how powerful and terrifying Pennywise truly is.

He catches a glimpse of Pennywise’s eyes, understanding that the creature already knows he’s there. But before Pennywise can affect him, the ghost of his grandmother suddenly appears and urges him to leave. This is notable because, in Stephen King’s The Shining, Dick Hallorann explains that Danny got his psychic abilities from his grandmother. Her appearance here reinforces this idea of a family connection to the supernatural.

Why Hallorann Says “It Wasn’t Supposed To See Us”

Hallorann almost fell out of his seat on the plane, but Hanlon caught him, pulling him back from a disturbing vision. Later, when General Shaw questioned him about his initial encounter with the creature they were hunting, Hallorann cautioned that it shouldn’t have been able to see them. He understood the creature was far more dangerous and malicious than anyone imagined. Now that it knew they were looking for it and understood their intentions, it would likely use that information against them, potentially unleashing a terrible threat upon Derry.

Even though he was deeply disturbed by his experience with Pennywise, Hallorann leveraged his recent success to ask General Shaw for a favor. He requested a safe, private location where he and his men could unwind. This strongly suggests a connection to ‘The Black Spot’ from Stephen King’s novel – a social club established for African American soldiers on the edge of Derry. Unfortunately, the club doesn’t fare well in the long run.

What Happened During The Bradley Gang Massacre In 1935?

The new series Welcome to Derry references the Bradley Gang Massacre, a real event from Derry’s history in 1935, which also appears in Stephen King’s original IT book. The story goes that Al and George Bradley, leaders of a notorious gang, came to Derry to lay low and get supplies. While buying ammunition at Machen’s Sporting Goods, the store owner recognized them and alerted authorities.

Soon after, the gang found themselves surrounded by townspeople who began shooting at them. Mike Hanlon later explained that this violent confrontation was crucial in reawakening Pennywise and starting another period of its attacks. It was revealed that Pennywise had secretly orchestrated the massacre, manipulating the town’s adults with its power. This explains why a soldier mentioned to General Shaw that many residents reported seeing Pennywise during the attack.

Why Pennywise Could Not Leave The Woods In The Opening Sequence

The opening scene of It: Welcome to Derry shows a young General Shaw being pursued through the woods by a frightening form of Pennywise. He’s nearly caught until his friend intervenes, allowing Shaw to escape and run clear of the woods. Notably, the creature doesn’t follow him, hinting that the people of Derry may have discovered a way to keep Pennywise contained within the wooded area.

It’s possible the townspeople are secretly using Pennywise to protect their forests. In the current timeline of ‘It: Welcome to Derry,’ General Shaw is determined to control Pennywise and exploit its abilities to gain an advantage in the global nuclear arms race. He believes the locals, if they successfully trapped Pennywise in the woods, might hold the key to achieving his goal.
