The latest episode of ‘Welcome to Derry’ explained why the military arrived in town, and the reason echoes a plot point from a well-known Stephen King film.
The new horror series got off to a fantastic start on HBO Max, becoming the most-watched show on the platform after just one episode. It racked up 5.7 million views in its first three days. This surge in popularity also boosted interest in the original movies, with both IT and IT: Chapter Two climbing to the top three most-watched films on the service.
Our review of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ highlights how the film expands on the history of the town and its terrifying clown, while also showcasing intense and relentless violence against the characters.
Set during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis – when Pennywise was last active – the show also features a nearby military base. The latest episode explained why the military is there, and the reason surprisingly echoes the plot of another great horror film adapted from a Stephen King story.
It: Welcome to Derry Episode 2 has connection to The Mist

The military has a base in Derry, officially for national defense during the Cold War. However, the show It: Welcome to Derry reveals they’re also trying to capture and control Pennywise, the creature behind the town’s horrors. They believe Pennywise’s ability to inspire intense fear could be weaponized and used against Russia if the Cold War heats up.
The characters also brought in Dick Hallorann (Chris Chalk) because he can use his mind to locate Pennywise, eventually leading them to discover a decades-old car filled with skeletons – a setup for the violent events involving the Bradley Gang that we see later. This focus on a military aspect of the story feels reminiscent of another chilling Stephen King novel, The Mist.
When a strange, thick mist rolls into the town of Bridgton, Maine, a group of ordinary people find themselves trapped inside a supermarket. Anyone who ventures outside is immediately threatened by terrifying creatures and enormous insects.
The book and the 2007 film adaptation both reveal that the military was conducting a secret project called Arrowhead. This project involved trying to open a gateway to another dimension, but it went wrong and resulted in the mist entering our world.
General Shaw might be running an early version of Project Arrowhead in It: Welcome to Derry

Fans of horror may have spotted a creepy shot in the first trailer for ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ – a dense fog rolling into town. While it could simply be a trick of Pennywise, the imagery immediately brings to mind the Stephen King novella and film, ‘The Mist’.
The show might be connecting to Stephen King’s ‘The Mist’ through its military plot. General Shaw is already heading up the search for Pennywise, so it’s possible this leads him to create Project Arrowhead as a way to investigate strange and supernatural events.
Right now, this is just an idea, but similar to how the show brought in a younger version of the character Hallorann from ‘The Shining,’ it could also expand on the story of ‘The Mist.’ We’ll have to wait and see if that happens.
While we wait for details about the military’s role in the series, check out our rankings of the best Stephen King movies, the story behind Andy Muschietti’s new project Welcome to Derry, and our picks for the greatest horror films ever made.
