The recent episode of ‘Welcome to Derry’ included a surprising reference to Stephen King’s original story, and the showrunners have discussed how King’s work inspired them.
The seventh episode of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ included a disturbing flashback about Bob Gray, and a similarly disturbing scene with Mrs. Kersh.
The Black Spot fire was a key element of the series, revealed as an act of racially motivated terror. While briefly mentioned in Stephen King’s novel ‘It,’ the series explored this event in detail.
The creators of Welcome to Derry didn’t start from scratch; Stephen King was available to help with questions, and his original story provided a clear direction for the series.
It: Welcome to Derry creators tried to be as “bold” as Stephen King

In a recent ScreenRant interview, Jason Fuchs, co-creator of ‘It: Welcome to Derry,’ explained that he and his fellow creators – Barbara and Andy Muschietti – were careful when adapting Stephen King’s novel. They were particularly cautious about adding details to areas where the story was less defined, such as the backstory of the character Bob Gray.
According to Fuchs, one of the most rewarding aspects of stories – not just in ‘It,’ but in many of his favorite books – is the presence of unanswered questions. He’s been pondering the mysteries in this book since he first read it at age eleven. As a dedicated reader, he enjoys both the intrigue of not knowing and the desire for resolution.
Honestly, when they started hinting at Bob Gray’s backstory and why It took the form of Pennywise, I immediately thought, “Okay, this better be good!” Like, if they’re going to dive into that, it needs to be a payoff, otherwise what’s the point of even bringing it up? I was really hoping for some solid answers.

Fuchs explained that the goal should be to be as daring and imaginative in storytelling as Stephen King. However, when taking big risks with the narrative, it’s natural to worry about going too far. They constantly ask themselves if these choices are too extreme, stray too far from established lore, and whether Stephen King himself would support them.
Honestly, one of the best parts of working on this show is having Stephen King involved. It means we don’t have to worry about leaving plot holes or unanswered questions hanging. We can always bounce ideas off him – like, ‘Hey, we’re thinking of doing this, does it make sense? Could this be why things are happening?’ He’s basically our safety net, which is amazing.
We were super excited to start this project, but also a little nervous! Luckily, we had Stephen King as a guide. We could always check in with him to make sure we were heading in a direction that felt true to his world and story – it was like having an expert advisor to keep us on the right track.
If you’re looking for more of the show, here’s when Episode 8 will be available, and a Stephen King film called ‘Welcome to Derry’ that fans will definitely want to check out.
