As a cinephile, I’m eagerly anticipating the union of four illustrious talents from France, Australia, and England in the upcoming film “Burnt Piano.
Actors Isabelle Huppert, Geoffrey Rush, Abbie Cornish, Ray Winstone, and newcomer Tarquin Cameron have signed up for a movie adaptation of an Australian stage play written by Justin Fleming. Known for their roles in “Elle,” “The Piano Teacher,” “The King’s Speech,” “Shine,” “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” “Jack Ryan,” “The Gentlemen,” and “The Departed” respectively, these talented individuals will be part of this upcoming production.
Under the guidance of Fleming, the movie – a collaborative project between Australia and France – is currently being helmed by Fred Schepisi (known for “Roxanne” and “Six Degrees of Separation”). This production is characterized as a blend of tragedy, comedy, drama, and mystery.

The film, previously adapted by Fleming, is now being led by director Fred Schepsi in a unique collaboration between Australia and France. Known for works like “Roxanne” and “Six Degrees of Separation”, this movie is described as a blend encompassing elements of tragedy, comedy, drama, and mystery.
In the late 1980s, the story “Burnt Piano” centers around a woman who owns a small bookstore (Cornish), who is deeply attracted to and will go to great lengths to meet renowned playwright Samuel Beckett (Rush). This intention displeases her father, a mediocre short story writer (Winstone). With a mix of reluctant assistance from her troubled son (Cameron) and fierce opposition from the playwright’s protective wife (Huppert), she persuades her family to embark on a whimsical journey to Paris in an attempt to pose some of life’s most profound questions directly to Beckett.
The production is handled by Janice Eymann from Filmworks and Stuart Quin from Full Circle Productions, while Michael Ryan serves as executive producer.
According to the producers, “Burnt Piano” will mostly shoot in Paris with one week in Australia.
Fleming’s play “Burnt Piano” had a run across Australia before it garnered recognition, winning the New York New Dramatists’ Award in 2000. In March 2001, it made its New York City debut. The production was also nominated for several awards, including the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards, and it secured the Banff PlayRites Residency in Canada.
