Filipino movie director Isabel Sandoval, based in Hollywood and famed for the critically praised “Lingua Franca,” is polishing off her new film titled “Moonglow.” This upcoming feature is a romantic noir that takes place in the Philippines during the era of Marcos, specifically in 1979.
The movie has been chosen for the Hong Kong – Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF), a market event running simultaneously with Hong Kong FilMart.
A Filipino-language crime drama revolves around Dahlia, a disenchanted police assistant who secretly takes money from her crooked police chief superior’s safe and distributes it to the slum residents whose homes were devastated. Unbeknownst to her, the police chief assigns Dahlia to work with his nephew Charlie on the theft investigation, who also happens to be Dahlia’s ex-lover.
Sandoval shared with EbMaster that he’s always been captivated by the methodical, gradual suspense found in Jean-Pierre Melville’s thrillers. He initially envisioned blending those characteristics with the poetic cinematography and romantic feel of Max Ophüls as the basis for the film.
The production, which already has a budget of $1.08 million, is on the hunt for extra funding between $100,000 and $150,000 to finish post-production tasks, such as film transfers aimed at creating a gritty look consistent with the era, as stated by producer Alemberg Ang.
After watching Isabel’s Cinemalaya movie ‘Apparition’, Ang, who has worked on films like ‘Plan 75’ by Chie Hayakawa and ‘Some Nights I Feel Like Walking’ by Petersen Vargas, expressed being a fan. When she shared her intention to create an Asian noir that draws inspiration from the works of past Asian masters but with a unique twist, Ang was eager to be involved right away.
Director Sandoval, known for episodes of “Under the Banner of Heaven” on FX (nominated for Emmys) and “The Summer I Turned Pretty” on Amazon Prime, is promoting “Moonglow” as a movie that resonates with film enthusiasts who enjoy the romantic style of Wong Kar-wai’s “In The Mood for Love” as well as the classic romance of Hollywood.
The film director, who is part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, takes great pride in recruiting renowned sound designer Tu Duu-chuh, famed for collaborating with esteemed Asian cinema masters such as Edward Yang, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, and Wong Kar-wai.
Speaking about his film ‘Moonglow’, Sandoval expressed his hope that it follows the success of his previously directed and starred films at prestigious festivals like Venice, Locarno, and Cannes (with the latter even winning a César Award). He also desires for ‘Moonglow’ to excel in Asia, an area where his previous works haven’t had as much impact.
At present, the team responsible for creating the project is actively looking for opportunities to place it in festivals and secure partnerships for distribution within the Hong Kong market, once the project has been completed.
