The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) has chosen Isabel Arrate Fernandez to serve as its new artistic director, starting from July 1 onwards. She is replacing Orwa Nyrabia, who has been the festival’s head for seven years and will be stepping down at that time. Arrate Fernandez will collaborate with managing director Cees van ‘t Hullenaar in her role.
In her new position, Arrate Fernandez will have overall authority for setting the creative direction and establishing policies within the organization, while also organizing the festival schedule, which encompasses industry, talent, education, and the programming for the newly opened Het Documentaire Paviljoen in Vondelpark.
or more casually:
Arrate Fernandez will be responsible for shaping the creative direction of our organization, planning the festival lineup (industry, talents, education, and new pavilion programs), and overseeing our latest addition in Vondelpark.
Arrate Fernandez, with over two decades under her belt as the executive director of the IDFA Bertha Fund and head of IDFA’s filmmaker support department, is known for having a sharp talent-spotting ability, an extensive international network, and a strong commitment to inclusivity, as expressed in a statement.
Through her guidance, the fund has emerged as a prominent stage for documentarians hailing from Africa, Asia, Latin America, Caribbean, Eastern Europe, and Oceania. The statement further noted that her dedication to independent filmmakers and diverse viewpoints has left an indelible mark on the documentary terrain.
Marry de Gaay Fortman, head of the oversight committee, stated: “Following multiple rounds of evaluations with numerous applicants, we found Isabel to be the most suitable candidate. Her vision, approach, and concepts resonated strongly with our oversight board and advisory panel. We are optimistic that Isabel will propel IDFA forward, particularly in the artistic domain, both within our country and on the global stage.
Arrange Fernandez stated: “I feel privileged and thrilled to assume this position. Documentary films and art have always resonated deeply within me – particularly for their power of imagination, introspection, and awe-inspiring qualities. The ingenuity and dedication of filmmakers in bringing captivating stories to life, providing a more profound understanding of the world, is an ongoing inspiration. IDFA stands as a hub where all these elements converge: a platform for artistic liberty and social activism. In these times, documentaries are a potent instrument to unveil fresh viewpoints, foster connections, and spark critical thought. I am eager to collaborate with the team to uphold IDFA’s esteemed legacy and guide its future course.
