Some narratives start with a charming first encounter, as portrayed in the Norwegian show “Rebound,” which unexpectedly follows a heartbreaking separation that took everyone by surprise.

At Canneseries, the series debuts featuring Alex (Mathilde Storm) returning from a trip to Bali. Despite their turbulent relationship, she’s overjoyed to reunite with her boyfriend Mikkel. She harbors hopes that this time they can make things work permanently. However, during their intimate moment together, Mikkel ends things unexpectedly – mirroring one of “Sex and the City’s” iconic lines: “You’re ending our relationship while we’re still…?”

According to Melike Leblebicioglu Kaveh, the creator of this show, it was crucial to be extremely truthful from the get-go and to mislead the audience a tad. At first glance, one might assume this reunion is romantic, but it’s actually quite the opposite. The initial episode effectively sets the tone for the entire series.

I’ve experienced something similar too. My initial major emotional turmoil was caused by a difficult breakup. It can make you feel incredibly lonely and like everything is spiraling out of your control. Without a doubt, it stemmed from a deeply personal part of me.

In the television series, Alex feels deeply saddened yet prefers not to dwell on her sorrow. As suggested by her friend Sara, Alex might be better off moving on from Mikkel and seeking a temporary distraction instead.

Kaveh points out that often, we find ourselves in situations where we’re rebounding from past relationships or projecting our desires onto someone else, hoping they will fit the mold we have in mind. However, every person has their unique story, challenges, and way of handling relationships, which might not align with our expectations.

A ‘rebound’ could potentially lead you to your genuine next love; however, more often than not, it serves as a harmful method of dodging the pain that needs to be confronted. Nevertheless, I believe it offers an excellent platform for creators and characters alike.

Storm teams up with Maria Wiik, Oddgeir Thune, and Arjan Nilsen. Daniel Fahre takes the helm as director, while Fenomen Studios produces this project under Null47’s supervision. Beta Film manages distribution and unveils a trailer, which is exclusively revealed to EbMaster.

Kaveh’s no stranger to YA shows, having worked on “17” and “Norwegian-ish”.

She emphasizes the significance of understanding their point of view and communicating with them, as circumstances evolve rapidly. For instance, something I created half a decade ago is no longer relevant due to changes in their language or dating dynamics. Since I’m now in my forties, married with children, I’m not experiencing the same challenges. Therefore, it’s crucial that whatever I create is tailored to this generation.

This implies that even with the adoption of new technologies like social media, it can still feel frustrating when you’re trying to focus on something, such as writing, and expect interpersonal communication like a knock on the door, but instead, they would be communicating through text or messaging. She chuckles, “It’s like trying to isolate yourself, but you just can’t completely. You might find yourself snooping online about someone, or feeling envious of others, without ever having to leave your own space.

Kaveh didn’t mind the show’s ultra-short, few-minute long episodes. 

The format makes the show compact and impactful, adding an extra dimension. Many studies show younger viewers prefer shorter videos due to their frequent use of social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat. It caters more to their preferences as they enjoy watching content while multitasking. However, it’s worth noting that even older generations, such as my parents, can be found scrolling through Instagram too.

Despite her protagonists’ age, the show might speak to older viewers as well. 

She remarks that the emotions experienced during a breakup are consistent, but the specifics tend to vary.

Experiencing tough times can make it seem like everything is falling apart. Yet, with time, you may find that those events were necessary and beneficial. Over the years, you’ve come to realize that you always manage to pull through difficult situations, as you’ve done so before.

Currently, Kaveh is eager to delve deeper into topics that resonate more with her own experiences. She mentions a preference for themes relevant to her age and personal circumstances. Additionally, she expresses an interest in the complexities of cultural identity, particularly as a Turkish individual living in Norway. Interestingly, she enjoys engaging with younger audiences too.

From 2018 to 2021, I served as a writer for the show ’17’. To this day, I continue to encounter viewers who are just discovering it for the first time. We engage in fascinating conversations about it. During production, we’d interact with children to discuss each season, gather their feedback on what they enjoyed and disliked.
