Is The Girlfriend Season 2 happening? What we know after “unhinged” cliffhanger ending

Prime Video’s new show, The Girlfriend, is a big success, quickly becoming the most-watched TV show in the US. If you’ve already finished all the episodes, you’re probably curious if it will be renewed for a second season, particularly after such a shocking finale.

Wow, 2025 is turning out to be an incredible year for TV! As a fan, I’m so excited because we’ve already gotten new seasons of shows I love like Severance, Wednesday, Andor, The Last of Us, Squid Game, The Bear, and Peacemaker. And it’s not stopping there – Gen V Season 2 and the final season of Stranger Things are still on the way! I can’t wait!

You know, watching the 2025 Emmys was wild! It wasn’t the shows everyone *expected* to win that really shined. Seriously, ‘Adolescence’ and ‘The Pitt’ totally blew everyone away and took home the big prizes. It just proves you never know what’s going to become a huge hit!

While it’s not likely to win any awards, ‘The Girlfriend’ has quickly become a popular choice for viewers on streaming platforms this year, generating a lot of conversation since its release on September 10, 2025. Be aware that the following contains spoilers for Season 1!

Is The Girlfriend Season 2 happening?

As of right now, Prime Video hasn’t announced whether “The Girlfriend” will get a second season, but it’s still possible.

Here are a couple of things to keep in mind: the new TV show is based on Michelle Frances’ novel, and that novel doesn’t have a follow-up. Several sources have also called it a “limited series,” which means it’s designed to tell one complete story without continuing beyond a single season.

Just because the original story is finished doesn’t rule out the possibility of more episodes – many shows have continued even after they’ve used up all the source material.

Several popular TV shows have expanded on their source material, going beyond the stories told in the original books. Examples include *Big Little Lies*, which developed beyond Liane Moriarty’s novel, *The Handmaid’s Tale*, which continued after Margaret Atwood’s book ended, and *Game of Thrones*, which famously surpassed George R.R. Martin’s series-with varying degrees of success.

You know how some shows are advertised as being just one season long? Well, that doesn’t always stay true. I remember being told *13 Reasons Why* was a single, complete story, but they ended up making three more seasons! *The White Lotus* did the same thing – it was supposed to be a limited series, but they brought it back for another run. It’s a bit annoying when they don’t stick to what they originally said, honestly.

Okay, so a big factor in whether a show gets continued is how well it’s doing, and “The Girlfriend” is seriously popular right now, both here and around the world. That definitely makes me think Amazon might give it another season – they’d be crazy not to!

There’s also the fact that there’s more story to tell…

The Girlfriend cliffhanger ending explained

By the end of the novel, Daniel discovers a shocking truth about Cherry: she was responsible for her father’s death, and her own mother warns he’s in danger. However, it’s too late to do anything about it, as Laura is already dead, Daniel and Cherry are married, and Cherry is expecting a baby.

So far, the story has been shown to us through the perspectives of Daniel’s mother, Laura, and his girlfriend, Cherry. However, both characters are presented as unreliable narrators, meaning we don’t get a completely objective account of events.

Okay, so there’s this guy, Daniel, and two girls, Laura and Cherry, who absolutely can’t stand each other. From the get-go, they’re both trying to sabotage each other and get Daniel to ditch the other. It’s a total mess of scheming and one-upmanship!

Halfway through the season, Daniel has a rock climbing accident. Laura tells Cherry he’s dead, while also telling Daniel that Cherry has disappeared.

Once Daniel reveals his choice of Cherry, Laura starts investigating Cherry’s past, uncovering some troubling secrets.

Cherry had always said her father passed away when she was fourteen, but her mother, Tracey, revealed to Laura that he’s actually still alive. He’s in a nursing home and unable to care for himself because Cherry pushed him off a construction site several years ago.

Laura secretly taped their conversation, intending to reveal the truth about Daniel’s future wife to him. However, Daniel was tired of his mother meddling and didn’t want to be forced to choose between her and Cherry. In the end, he chose Cherry.

Laura pretends to be okay with his choice and asks for one final drink together, but she’s actually planning to drug him so he’ll watch a recording she has. Meanwhile, Cherry figures out where Daniel is and arrives, which leads to a physical fight between the two men.

When Daniel woke up, he rushed outside and saw his mother, Laura, holding Cherry under the water in the pool. He quickly stepped in, stopped Laura, and helped Cherry get free.

While Daniel was checking on Cherry, Laura suddenly went limp. He quickly pulled her from the water, but it was already too late – she had died.

The story then skips ahead to a point where Cherry and Daniel have built a life together. They are now married, and Cherry is expecting a baby.

Everything changes when Daniel discovers Laura’s phone on the floor-it seems she dropped it while fighting with Cherry. He turns it on and hears a recording of Tracey cautioning Laura about Cherry.

While Cherry is out, Daniel overhears Tracey making a disturbing statement. She warns someone that Cherry will eventually ask for a favor they won’t want to grant, and if that happens, she’ll likely get rid of them.

The episode concludes with the story still open, leaving lots of possibilities for a second season. It seems likely the next season will center around the tension between Daniel and Cherry, but it’s also possible the story could go in a different direction.

Is Laura really dead?

Although it looks like Laura dies at the end of The Girlfriend, her death isn’t certain. Considering Daniel is a doctor, he might have actually saved her and then decided to cut ties. Now that he’s received Tracey’s warning, a second season could bring them back together.

Right now, this is just a guess, but Robin Wright, who plays Claire Underwood on *House of Cards*, hinted to Today that her character might not be dead. She said, “If someone brings her back to life, it won’t happen on screen.”

Wright called the ending “open-ended,” and when asked if Laura was still alive, she simply said, “We’ll see.” This suggests there’s a possibility she survived.

When asked about a potential second season, the actress playfully suggested it could be titled ‘The Boyfriend,’ with a dark twist: the boyfriend would be the one who kills her character.

Laurie Davidson, the star of ‘Daniel,’ is open to continuing the story if it’s renewed. He explained that if there’s a second season, Daniel would be seeking answers from Cherry, especially considering the extreme lengths he went to – killing his mother – to protect the people he cares about. Davidson added that Daniel will definitely need extensive therapy to deal with everything that’s happened.

During an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Olivia Cooke, who plays Cherry, was asked about whether her character, Laura, is actually dead. Cooke responded with a bit of mystery, saying, “We don’t really know for sure, do we? It’s possible she’s still alive…”

The show has caused a big conversation online, with people strongly divided over who the real villain is – Laura or Cherry. No matter which character they sympathize with, viewers all agree that the Prime Video series is incredibly exciting and unpredictable.

People are saying “The Girlfriend” is a thrilling and unpredictable show. One viewer called it “unhinged” and a “wild ride,” while another simply described it as “crazy” from beginning to end.

The Girlfriend is open-ended

A sign that a second season might happen is that the show’s creators, Naomi Sheldon and Gabbie Asher, weren’t afraid to depart from the original book’s ending. This shows they’re willing to make changes and explore new directions with the story.

In the novel, Cherry is the one who dies, falling to her death during a confrontation with Laura.

Wright, who also served as an executive producer and directed three episodes, recently shared with Harper’s Bazaar that the original plan involved Daniel’s death being an accident.

We explored some really dark possibilities, even suggesting Laura might be responsible for her son’s death. We were thinking along the lines of a classic Greek tragedy, considering all sorts of different ways things could have happened. Ultimately, I decided the story would be better if her son ended things.

The series concludes with a purposefully unresolved ending. The cliffhanger, the uncertainty surrounding Laura’s destiny, and the showrunners’ decision to deviate from the source material all suggest the story could continue in the future.
