As expected, the climax of Avatar: Fire and Ash features a fierce fight between Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), using everything from guns to hand-to-hand combat. But did Quaritch actually die? Stephen Lang hinted that his character might not be gone for good… Beware – spoilers follow!
After a lengthy three hours and seventeen minutes, the movie Fire and Ash concludes with Sully and his family successfully defending against the Resources Development Administration. They’re aided by a coalition of clans and animals who work together to stop the RDA’s hunt for Tulkun.
The heart of the story’s climax lies with Sully, Quaritch, and Spider Socorro, the villain’s son. Quaritch is still focused on capturing Spider so the RDA can learn how he’s able to breathe on Pandora, while Spider just wants to remain with the family who raised him.
The exciting battle happens among floating rocks close to a gravity vortex that previously decimated much of the RDA’s army, culminating in Quaritch seemingly falling to his death. However, is he truly gone? TopMob recently spoke with Stephen Lang to find out if Quaritch is actually dead…
Is Quaritch dead?

It’s understandable why viewers wondered if Quaritch actually died – he deliberately fell into a fire rather than be captured by Jake, Neytiri, and their allies. However, Stephen Lang has clarified that “You don’t see him die,” and in movies and TV, that often leaves the door open for a character’s return.
Lang clarified that you don’t actually see the character die, just fall from a great height. He pointed out that falls are common in Pandora, explaining that the planet’s environment often involves characters falling, and that Eywa created roots to help with this very problem.
Lang explained that Quaritch was in a dangerous situation. He wasn’t flying over the jungles or forests of Pandora anymore; he was over water that was on fire. Lang admitted it didn’t look promising for Quaritch, but added that he was a resilient and formidable opponent.
Sigourney Weaver didn’t intend to echo her role in ‘Aliens’ when filming a particularly emotional scene in ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’; she was simply focused on the scene’s impact on her.

Quaritch is incredibly resilient, and considering he’s already come back to life once, it wouldn’t be shocking if he managed to survive again. Even if he doesn’t, the RDA scientists—the creators of the Avatar program—could easily bring him back.
Here’s the latest on Avatar: Sigourney Weaver shares news about the fourth and fifth films, Stephen Lang and Oona Chaplin discuss their characters’ complex connection in Avatar: The Seed Bearer, and James Cameron explains the meaning behind the sequel’s title.
