NBC’s cancellation of the TV series “Grosse Pointe Garden Society” follows a concerning trend in network decisions, which might worsen before improving. The finale of “Grosse Pointe Garden Society” Season 1 wasn’t overly dramatic with a cliffhanger, but it set up what seemed like the beginning of a larger story. This made Season 2 of “Grosse Pointe Garden Society” an exciting opportunity for compelling storytelling.
The intriguing storyline of murder, conspiracy, and adultery set among Michigan’s upper class might have unfolded further, yet remains unwritten due to NBC’s cancellation of Grosse Pointe Garden Society. While the network’s choice wasn’t entirely unexpected given its modest audience ratings and slightly above-average reviews, it highlights a broader trend in their series cancellations.
Grosse Pointe Garden Society Is NBC’s Final Cancelation From The 2024-2025 TV Cycle
NBC Canceled Six Shows Altogether In One Season
Following the network’s announcement of five cancellations in May, fans of NBC’s “Grosse Pointe Garden Society” may have experienced a glimmer of optimism when they noticed the dramedy was not on the list. However, the cancellation of “Suits LA” could have been a harbinger of doom, as “Suits LA’s” ratings were slightly better than those of “Grosse Pointe Garden Society.
This might have been a significant factor when evaluating each show’s performance. Notably, “Grosse Pointe Garden Society” had the poorest ratings among all NBC series that were canceled in 2025. Moreover, the second-lowest ratings for “Suits LA” weren’t enough to prevent it from being the second show, after only one season, to be axed, alongside “Grosse Pointe.
NBC’s other terminated shows were given the chance to secure a renewal. Shows like Found and The Irrational were axed after two seasons, while Night Court and Lopez vs Lopez managed three. Even though most of these canceled shows saw a drop in viewership, they seemed to believe they would be renewed because almost every NBC series that was terminated ended with a cliffhanger or significant shift in the status quo.
Series | Seasons | Cliffhanger/Status Quo Change |
Found | 2 | Sir is found potentially dead while Gabi publicly admits to kidnapping him. |
Grosse Pointe Garden Society | 1 | Alice appears to admit to Quiche’s murder after Catherine convinces the gang to mulch his body. |
Lopez vs Lopez | 3 | George and Elsa come to sympathetic terms after her attempt to steal the house results in a mental health scare. |
Night Court | 3 | Abby’s secret husband shows up right as Jake is about to propose. |
Suits LA | 1 | Ted, Stuart, and Samantha finally agree to complete their merger. |
The Irrational | 2 | Rose opens her own agency as Alec learns he’s being watched. |
Each of these shows’ conclusions hinted at potential storylines for their future, despite the uncertainty involved in the network taking such risks with the status quo changes, which resulted in increased viewership. However, the cancellation of Grosse Pointe Garden Society left a sense of disappointment, as it seemed poised to outshine its previous seasons.
Why Grosse Pointe Garden Society’s Cancelation Is Frustrating
The Show’s Tone And Story Were Uniquely Fresh
Although many people drew parallels to “Desperate Housewives” at its launch, “Grosse Pointe Garden Society” quickly carved out its own niche due to its distinctive concept from the very first episode. The show’s lengthy murder mystery and time-jumping structure kept each episode engaging, while subtle touches like calling the body “Quiche” proved brilliant when the victim was eventually unveiled.
The unique approach taken by Grosse Pointe Garden Society, where each episode was skillfully woven around creative comparisons between life and gardening, set it apart from other series in the genre. This storytelling method, often seen as clichéd when not executed well, proved to be a refreshing aspect of the show.
Instead of gradually diminishing in influence, it appears that these elements of the show actually became stronger as time went on, suggesting that the distinctive nature of Grosse Pointe Garden Society might have played a role in its prolonged cancellation, despite its initial struggles with low ratings. Given its excellent execution and captivating performances, it’s hard to believe that salvaging Grosse Pointe Garden Society from being cancelled was an impossible task.
In essence, NBC showcased a strategy for reviving the show “Grosse Pointe” through their approach to “Law & Order: Organized Crime” season 5. If the Grosse Pointe Garden Society had switched platforms to Peacock and disengaged from weekly ratings competition, it might have flourished with its binge-friendly narrative structure. Regrettably, it wasn’t the only series with a unique concept that missed out on this lifeline.
NBC’s Canceled Several Unique Shows In 2025
Found And The Irrational Were Only Getting Better
Although Grosse Pointe Garden Society was the only scripted NBC series that wasn’t a sitcom or procedural, there were numerous canceled shows under those categories that boasted unique storylines. For instance, Lopez vs Lopez was one of the rare minority sitcoms on network television, while Found focused on often-overlooked individuals from diverse backgrounds.
In the course of its episodes, The Irrational showcased a distinctive approach not commonly found in today’s network procedurals, using techniques such as close-up magic or community theater (which cleverly highlighted Jesse L. Martin’s accomplished career on Broadway). Additionally, both finales of The Irrational and Found series were set to intensify the dramatic arcs within their respective narratives.
The problem is exacerbated when examining the shows NBC opted to renew. The second season renewal for “The Hunting Party” is positive news, considering it initially had a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes upon its premiere. However, beyond its focus on serial killers, “The Hunning Party” doesn’t offer much in terms of distinctive tone outside its conspiracy plotline, which is similar to that found in other procedurals.
In a similar vein, Brilliant Minds shares distinct similarities with The Good Doctor in its narrative approach and emphasis on neurodivergence. On the other hand, NBC’s 2025 fall lineup, which includes two sitcoms and five Dick Wolf procedurals, resembles typical programming blocks found on most major networks. It’s intriguing to note that NBC’s new NBA deal could potentially exacerbate this situation.
NBA’s Arrival On NBC Shouldn’t Deter The Network From Doing Good Scripted Shows
The Network’s Latest Sports Deal Could Signal A Risky Change Of Focus
Approximately two decades since the NBA’s contract ended with ABC, it will be moving back to NBC for the 2025-2026 season. This decision seems to indicate that securing an 11-year media rights contract with the Association and enlisting Michael Jordan as a special contributor are significant priorities for the network.
It’s not unusual that people think sports tend to produce more income than shows scripted specifically for a niche audience. This mindset often influences networks to prioritize established programming over innovative content. Yet, even though St. Denis Medical adds value to the mockumentary genre, the format itself plays a significant part in attracting viewers.
Despite recent decreases in mainstream sports ratings, it could be more hazardous to disregard new, high-quality programming for a sports-centric schedule. On the contrary, viewers watching NBA on NBC and Peacock might be less likely to switch channels when coverage transitions into a series with an engaging introduction.
Essentially, concentrating on innovative shows rather than relying solely on basketball viewership could be a financially beneficial long-term strategy. Despite the cancellation of ‘Grosse Pointe Garden Society’, it’s worth NBC reconsidering if sticking to traditional network trends is actually benefiting them.
