Spencer gets into some trouble in 1923 Season 2 Episode 4, encountering a threatening traveller who fans seem to think is played by none other than Michael Shannon. (Warning: spoilers ahead!)
Look, it’s a fair assumption to make. Taylor Sheridan is known for some major A-list cameos in his shows, with the Yellowstone universe containing real-life celebrities and Western legends alike.
From Bella Hadid to Billy Klapper and Billy Bob Thornton to Tom Hanks, the Sheridan cameo world isn’t a small one. But the newest episode of 1923 has fans wondering if they’ve spotted a popular actor underneath all the makeup.
So, was that Michael Shannon as the “Tax Collector”? Or is it just some wishful thinking from viewers? Here’s what you need to know.
No, that’s not Michael Shannon in 1923
Sorry folks, but the “Tax Collector” in 1923 Season 2 Episode 4 isn’t played by Michael Shannon.
Let’s set the scene: Spencer has been captured by police for his part in the bootlegging operation run by Luca’s family. He manages to escape them in Fort Worth, running into the trainyard and jumping onto a leaving train.
When he settles down, he sees he’s not alone in the carriage. There are three others, including a wordless man, a young girl, and a gruff man who calls himself the Tax Collector. They explain that in order to ride the train, Spencer will need to pay them the “train tax.” (“Everybody’s got to pay,” the man ominously tells him.)
Obviously, Spencer isn’t giving anything to these guys. But the Tax Collector makes a pretty obvious threat, telling Spencer that he’ll likely fall asleep soon. When he does, they’ll strike on him.
Upon the episode’s release, fans seem to think the Tax Collector is played by Oscar-nominated actor Michael Shannon. Having starred in movies including Man of Steel, The Shape of Water, and Knives Out, he’s certainly a recognizable cast member in any context.
However, you may be barking up the wrong tree with this one. The Tax Collector is covered in dirt and sweat – and also has a big bushy beard – but this definitely isn’t Michael Shannon:
The confusion can also be attributed to the credits, or lack thereof. The Tax Collector isn’t included in the episode’s credits (unless the character is named differently), but either way, Shannon’s name doesn’t appear in the credits either.
As such, viewers have assumed he plays the role in an uncredited capacity. So while the name of the actor who does play the Tax Collector isn’t given, we can be pretty sure this man isn’t Michael Shannon based on looks.
Shannon and Sheridan have a genuine connection in reality as they both appeared together in the 2018 war film “12 Strong.” Given that Sheridan has previously featured his friends in his shows, it is not implausible to imagine him including Shannon in one of his future productions.
