Karate Kid: Legends director Jonathan Entwistle discusses whether or not the character of Dre Parker, played by Jaden Smith, remains part of the series’ continuity. First appearing as the main character in the fifth film, The Karate Kid, in 2010, Dre was a student living with his mother and trained by Mr. Han (Jackie Chan). In this latest installment, Li Fong (Ben Wang) takes over as the protagonist, while Jackie Chan reprises his role as Mr. Han, Ralph Macchio returns as Daniel LaRusso, Sadie Stanley plays Mia, and Joshua Jackson portrays Victor.
During an interview with Inverse, Entwistle clarified if Smith’s character was still valid within the universe. The director affirmed that “Dre does have a presence” in the sixth movie, although not explicitly linked to Li Fong. He hinted that Dre could be seen as “a nod to a part of Mr. Han’s history.” Here’s his statement for you:
“Yes, Dre does exist within the sixth installment, but it’s not directly related to Li Fong,” explained Entwistle, hinting at a possible connection to Mr. Han’s past.
I believe he’s still around. There’s no direct connection to Li Fong in his current depiction, but it doesn’t rule out the possibility that he could be linked to a different part of Mr. Han’s tale.
Here are some variations:
– He persists, but there’s no strong link to Li Fong at present. However, he might have ties to another segment of Mr. Han’s narrative.
– I think he’s still active. As for Li Fong, there’s no clear association right now. Yet, it doesn’t exclude the chance that he could be relevant in another part of Mr. Han’s story.
– He remains, though not directly associated with Li Fong at this time. Nevertheless, don’t rule out a connection to some other chapter in Mr. Han’s life.
What Jonathan Entwistle’s Comment Means For Karate Kid: Legends
Karate Kid: Legends Doesn’t Break Existing Canons In The Universe
In the new series titled “Karate Kid: Legends“, there’s a soft reboot happening as characters like Li and returning stars Macchio and Chan from the 2010 movie make an appearance. As Dre’s tale remains part of the larger “Karate Kid” universe, it doesn’t have a direct tie to the upcoming 2025 film. The director has stated that although Dre isn’t present in this latest installment, there might be further opportunities for him down the line.
Entwistle’s remark offers insight into the relationships between characters within the Karate Kid series. In an interview, the director revealed that each Karate Kid film revolves around themes of family and mentorship. Here, they unite Mr. Han and Daniel through training, with Daniel also coaching Victor. Although Dre may not be directly tied to this particular installment, his presence in the universe suggests there’s potential for future stories involving him, similar to how the Cobra Kai series revisited Johnny Lawrence’s journey.
Our Take On Dre Parker’s Future In Karate Kid: Legends
Dre Could Return To Karate Kid If Things Align
15 years after the fifth installment from 2010, Karate Kid: Legends unfolds, set three years following the narrative of Netflix’s show Cobra Kai. Since the movie is based in New York City and centers around the Five Boroughs Tournament, where Li competes as a contender, it explains why Dre doesn’t appear in the film.
In a way that opens up possibilities for a follow-up, the ending of “Karate Kid: Legends” suggests that the characters could have more encounters. Daniel moves back to Los Angeles, while Mr. Han heads to Beijing, but he shows an eagerness to aid Victor in expanding his business in China. This might lead to Dre rejoining the Karate Kid series under the right circumstances (both behind and in front of the camera).
