Besides the valid queries, the resurfacing of a particular character in the Season 3 finale has sparked some apprehensions. It appears that this character has undergone a transformation, yet one can’t help but wonder if there’s more to it than meets the eye.

Is Fern senile or not in The Way Home Season 4?

In the tenth episode of Season 3, it’s unveiled that Grandma Fern was present at Colton and Del’s wedding back in 1975. This Grandma Fern appears very different from the one we first encountered in Episode 3. Given these contrasting portrayals, which version of Grandma Fern should we consider as the authentic one remains a question.

Let’s review what we’ve learned so far: In Episode 3, the character Kat encounters her great-grandmother Fern in a forest. The melody Fern hums goes like this: “25 first arrived, 25 never tried. 65 thought they died, 65 still alive.” When Kat asks Fern if she’s lost, Fern playfully responds, “Stop joking around, Kitty Cat, I know the way home.

Later on, Kat queries Fern about whether she’s acquainted with someone named Colton Landry, to which Fern responds affirmatively, revealing that he is her grandchild. Essentially, this conversation implies that Fern belongs to the Landry family lineage, making her a key figure in the current family tree.

Skip ahead to Episode 10. Del and Kat journey to a 1975 wedding whereupon Fern unexpectedly emerges. It turns out that Kat was fond of the name Kitty, which Fern used previously. Perplexed, Fern remarks, “If you can’t recall our prior encounter, then it hasn’t taken place… something intriguing to anticipate, I believe.” With a wink and a nod, Fern departs, humming a familiar rendition of the riddle from Episode 3 of ’65.

It’s clear that the ’65 riddle continues to be an unresolved mystery, and it doesn’t seem like we’ll find definitive answers anytime soon. However, the rapid shifts in our perception of Fern within a brief period have understandably caused fans to raise their eyebrows in curiosity.

A fan commented on Facebook, ‘It’s strange how Kat found Fern appearing confused and almost senile when they met in 1974, yet she seemed mentally sharp a year later at Colton and Del’s wedding. Even though I know dementia can bring brief moments of clarity, it still feels unbelievable.’ (I understand that dementia can cause lucid moments, but it’s hard to believe either way).
