Not just one Frankenstein adaptation based on an auteur approach is on the horizon, but The Bride!, in particular, promises to be thrilling. Drawing inspiration from Mary Shelley’s novel and the classic film Bride of Frankenstein, it marks the second directorial venture by Maggie Gyllenhaal, who transitioned from acting to directing. The story is relocated to 1930s Chicago, where Victor Frankenstein enlists Dr. Euphronius’ aid in creating a companion for his monster. The star-studded cast of The Bride! includes Jessie Buckley, Jake Gyllenhaal, Christian Bale, Penélope Cruz, John Magaro, and Peter Sarsgaard. This highly anticipated film is scheduled for release on March 6, 2026.
Over the past several months, unique, director-driven horror movies have been gaining immense popularity, a trend that began with Robert Eggers’ acclaimed reinterpretation of “Nosferatu,” released towards the end of last year. This was then followed by Ryan Coogler’s creation of “Sinners,” skillfully combining a historical backdrop (much like “The Bride”) with its vampire narrative. The release of this vampire film has only heightened my anticipation for other creatively terrifying films, such as “The Bride.” Moreover, there may be a common factor between the two that I truly hope is accurate.
Could Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! Be Our Next Big Horror Musical?
Early Reports Suggested The Frankenstein Movie Has Song-And-Dance Numbers
According to the early descriptions of “The Bride!”, it appears the film could challenge typical genre norms. Last year, during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sarsgaard (who is married to Gyllenhaal), expressed high praise for the movie. He described it as “exceptionally well-written“, “rebellious“, and “deeply emotional“. What’s particularly intriguing, though, is that he mentioned there are “large dance sequences and other elements in the film.” Here’s Sarsgaard’s full quote about this:
Jessie is an unstructured, spontaneous, and creative actor, which makes working with her a joy. She’s not only an excellent actor but also a talented singer and dancer. The movie features several dance sequences, so get ready to tap your feet! I’m thrilled about the backing Warner Bros. has given Maggie for this project. It’s a pleasure collaborating with Pam Abdy, whom I worked with on “Garden State” in the past. She works at a fantastic studio that values artistic vision.
It’s possible that a movie featuring song and dance sequences might not necessarily be classified as a musical. Although some films may incorporate music or dance sequences, they may not strictly fall under the category of musicals. As for “The Bride!”, while it is listed as a musical on IMDb, Warner Bros. has not confirmed this yet. The story, however, is set in the 1930s and involves Frankenstein and Euphronius bringing a murdered woman back to life. There’s some uncertainty about whether “The Bride!” will indeed be classified as a musical.
The Bride! Might Be Retooled, But Cutting The Music Would Be A Mistake
Sinners Proved The Power Of A Stealth Musical
it may be too arthouse and not squarely enough in the horror genre to generate the big audience that the budget demands.” The complete quote is provided below.
Experienced professionals in the field are puzzled by Maggie Gyllenhaal’s latest project, “The Bride,” featuring Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley. Despite directing only one film, “The Lost Daughter” for Netflix, which garnered three Oscar nominations, moving from a modest production to a budget over $100 million is quite unexpected. The head of one production company stated, “Giving her anything more than $15 million to make the movie seems irresponsible to me.” The film, shot in New York, has reportedly had troubling test screenings, indicating it might be too art-focused and not clearly enough within the horror genre to attract the large audience the budget requires. As of now, Abdy is trying to prepare the film for a fall release, but it’s rumored that she’s finding this task challenging. (Warner Bros declined to comment.)
In Gyllenhaal’s movie, there might be an unexpected blend of genres, as suggested by Sarsgaard’s comments. This is because a modern take on “Frankenstein” with musical numbers could potentially be too artistic for a major studio. If this turns out to be true, it’s possible that the musical scene featuring The Bride might not make it into the final version of the film. This would be disappointing, considering Sarsgaard’s high praise for Buckley’s performance in this particular scene.
After watching Sinners, I would find it all the more disappointing if The Bride were devoid of its musical aspects. Although the trailers for Sinners largely concealed this detail, music was integral to the very structure of the films. The blues melodies played by Sammie and Pearline’s powerful singing have been stuck in my head for over a month now. This musical element gives the movie its unique identity, shaping its atmosphere and pacing to create an exceptional horror experience that remains unparalleled.
In an attempt to minimize the impact of its musical aspects on audience reception, as was done with the film “Sinners”, studios have historically viewed this genre as potentially harmful to a movie’s box office success. This was evident in last year’s release of “Joker: Folie à Deux”, a musical sequel that grossed $207.5 million, significantly less than the original “Joker” which earned an astounding $1 billion. However, given the commercial success of “Sinners”, I am considerably more optimistic that Warner Bros., who produces both films, might be more inclined to take the risk with genre blending. If they opt not to, it could severely impact the artistic integrity of “The Bride”.
