As a long-time TikToker and gaming enthusiast, the recent news about the Canadian government ordering the shutdown of TikTok offices has left me quite puzzled. I’ve spent countless hours creating content, connecting with fellow creators, and even learning a thing or two from the engaging community that TikTok has to offer.

In Canada, several TikTok offices received orders for closure. Despite this, TikTok intends to challenge the government’s directive aimed at enhancing the app’s security in a legal setting.

As a gaming enthusiast, I recall when TikTok was once called Musical.ly, but it transformed into the app we recognize today following a purchase made by the Chinese technology giant, ByteDance, of the social media platform.

Despite being a dominant force among social media apps worldwide, TikTok is encountering possible limitations and prohibitions in certain nations.

Starting from this coming Wednesday, the 6th of November, two main TikTok offices based in Canada have been instructed to close down after a thorough security evaluation. However, one might wonder, what will be the impact on TikTok users in Canada as a result of this decision?

Is TikTok banned in Canada?

In Canada, it’s important to clarify that using TikTok is not forbidden. Yet, the Canadian government did instruct TikTok’s offices located in both Vancouver and Toronto to shut down.

After receiving a security assessment from the Canadian government regarding potential risks associated with TikTok, the offices had to be temporarily closed.

Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, François-Philippe Champagne, stated that the government’s decision was based on the Investment Canada Act, a law that permits them to assess foreign investments which could potentially harm Canada’s national security.

According to Champagne, the government is taking steps to tackle the unique threats to national security that ByteDance Ltd.’s Canadian operations pose. This action involves the creation of TikTok Technology Canada, Inc., he explained. The decision was made after reviewing relevant data and consulting with Canada’s intelligence and security community, as well as other government partners.

Canadian government warns TikTok users to adopt “cyber security practices”

While Canada doesn’t prohibit the use of TikTok, the Canadian authorities have advised all its users to follow “sound cybersecurity measures.

Champagne stated that the government isn’t interfering with Canadian users’ ability to access or create content on the TikTok app. He emphasized that choosing a social media platform or application is an individual’s personal preference.

Canadian users should prioritize adopting strong cybersecurity habits, carefully evaluating potential risks associated with social media tools and apps. This includes understanding how data protection, management, use, and sharing by foreign entities might occur, while also being cognizant of the jurisdictions under which these platforms operate.

TikTok fights back against Canadian offices closing

After the shutdown of TikTok’s offices in Vancouver and Toronto, a representative from TikTok announced their intention to sue the Canadian government.

Closing down TikTok’s Canadian operations and eliminating numerous high-paying local jobs is not beneficial for anyone, as the recent closure directive will indeed lead to this outcome.

As an ardent supporter, I’m ready to contest this ruling in the court of law. Rest assured, the vibrant TikTok community can continue to grow, discover fresh passions, and flourish, as businesses can still leverage its potential for success.

In Canada, TikTok is still accessible, but there’s a possibility of a ban in the United States if ByteDance fails to sell its U.S. operations. If this happens, the app might not be available in January 2025.
