Is Art the Clown a demon? Terrifier 3 ‘9th Circle’ theory explained

As a fan who’s had the misfortune (or perhaps fortune) of witnessing the bloody rampage of Art the Clown across multiple terrifying tales, I can confidently say that this character is more than just a masked, knife-wielding psychopath. He’s a demon, a creature from the ninth circle of Hell, and if Dante Alighieri were alive today, he’d probably have added Art to his Inferno.

Art the Clown, known for his brutal and chilling portrayal in the horror genre, might be one of the most ruthless slasher antagonists ever created. This silent, grotesque character causes unbearable suffering to all his victims, particularly those unfortunate souls in Terrifier 3. However, it’s not entirely clear if he is a demon. Despite hinting at supernatural origins, his nature remains ambiguous.

In the original ‘Terrifier’, the character Art the Clown captures a woman, suspends her upside-down, and meticulously slices her in two from her lower body to her forehead using a saw. The second movie, ‘Terrifier 2’, sees Art viciously attacking a teenage girl within her bedroom, leaving her as a mangled mass of flesh and shattered bone that would shock even the most hardened Cenobite.

In the third installment of “Terrifier,” the horror escalates: he brutally attacks kids, detonates them with explosives, saws a man cleanly in two from behind, and forces rodents into another character’s esophagus.

To put it another way, he’s a truly vicious individual, surpassing even his fellow slasher characters in cruelty. However, there seems to be more than just malice at play with Art the Clown, as Damien Leone has begun to uncover his true nature or identity.

Is Art the Clown a demon in the Terrifier movies?

Indeed, Art the Clown can be seen as a character possessing supernatural traits due to being reborn under the influence of a malevolent demonic entity, possibly even Satan himself. This entity has granted him an almost unending life span, making him a formidable and nearly immortal serial killer.

Towards the finale of the initial movie, both Tara and Dawn had perished, Vicky was critically wounded, and law enforcement officers were pointing guns at him. In the aftermath, Art took his own life. However, upon reaching the morgue, he miraculously regained life, murdered the medical examiner, and managed to flee. Subsequently, he found himself in a laundromat where he encountered The Little Pale Girl for the first time.

According to Leone, she represents the reincarnation of the essence of evil that brought back Art the Clown, assuming the identity of one of his earliest victims, Emily Crane – a 10-year-old girl who met her untimely death at a carnival under his hands.

Is Art the Clown a demon? Terrifier 3 ‘9th Circle’ theory explained

As per the director’s commentary in Terrifier 2, only three individuals had glimpses of the little girl: Art, Sienna, and Jonathan (her brother), due to a curse inflicted upon them by the clown. The movie concludes with Vicky becoming possessed by the same evil entity, resulting in her delivering Art’s head.

There’s some debate about whether the main antagonist in the Terrifier movies is actually the Devil, and if so, whether he has possessed Art. However, this theory does have some merit. In the short film, The 9th Circle, which was later re-released as part of All Hallows’ Eve, we were first introduced to Art. Interestingly, this same film also included a cult and Satan himself, who abducted and assaulted a young woman.

Terrifier 3 ‘The 9th Circle’ Easter egg

In the climax of Terrifier 3, I’m barely escaping for dear life as Sienna comes close to ending me. With adrenaline pumping, I hop on a bus to get away. As I scan the passengers, my eyes lock onto a book with an intriguing title – The 9th Circle.

To clarify, the short film “The 9th Circle” marked Leone’s initial directorial venture, and it introduced the character of Art the Clown, played by a different actor in this production.

Yet, this isn’t merely a small reference or inside joke. Instead, its name is a clear wink to Dante’s Inferno, the renowned epic poem by Dante Alighieri that narrates a journey through the torments of Hell.

Nine layers of Hell are depicted, representing individuals who have forsaken spiritual principles by succumbing to base desires such as carnal cravings or aggression, or by distorting their intellectual capabilities into deceit or ill-will towards others.

If Art is a demon, Sienna is God’s savior

According to Damien Leone’s statement, Sienna has been chosen by a higher power for the role of a savior. Instead of comparing her to well-known biblical figures like Jesus, Noah, or Moses, it’s essential to understand that she serves a unique purpose – to vanquish Art and send him to the underworld.

According to Leone’s explanation, the Clown Cafe scene in Terrifier 2 wasn’t just a dream, but rather a trial or test that took place within Sienna’s mind. If she doesn’t show courage at the end and refuse to resist Art, then she won’t be the chosen one.

As I dive my hand into the seemingly ordinary cereal box, an unexpected find catches me off guard – a sword. In an instant, it’s not just a toy anymore; it’s a weapon as I swiftly use it to ward off Art’s flamethrower. That very moment, it’s like the sword transcends from the realm of fantasy and into the tangible world, igniting with a fiery glow. It’s no longer just a sword; it’s a sword that’s been baptized by fire.

In the film Terrifier 2, when Sienna falls into a water tank, this was orchestrated by Satan; it became her own inferno, a torment to her spirit as she experienced an eternal sense of drowning, while her physical form lay confined within a coffin.

In the third installment of “Terrifier,” the horror becomes even more explicit as Sienna is compelled to don a wreath of thorns and endure injuries reminiscent of crucifixion, and she bears witness to her cousin being pulled into a gateway to Hell.

Should Terrifier 4 decide to follow through with this concept, it might lead to a climactic showdown in the underworld. In conversation with DiscussingFilm, director Damien Leone hinted at the destination.

“I have a clear idea about where the stories for these characters culminate, involving Sienna and Art the Clown. What I need to figure out now is how many films it will take me to reach that point.
