Is 3I/ATLAS an alien mothership or comet? We’ll find out on this exact date

After months of rumors suggesting it might be alien technology, we’ll soon find out the truth about 3I/ATLAS, the interstellar object that recently captured public attention.

Astronomers are puzzled by 3I/ATLAS, the third interstellar object discovered in our solar system. Detected earlier this year, it came from far outside our system and behaves strangely – it spins quickly, glows in an unusual way, and might even produce its own light. This has led to speculation that it could be a man-made object.

NASA believes the object is a comet, but Avi Loeb, a Harvard astrophysicist who often challenges conventional thinking about objects from outside our solar system, estimates there’s a 40% chance it could be technology created by aliens.

3I/ATLAS’ identity will be revealed just before Halloween

We’ll find out who’s right on October 29, 2025, when the object swings closest to the Sun.

According to Loeb, if comet 3I/ATLAS is a natural object, it should break apart. However, if it remains intact, he worries it might actually be releasing many small probes to observe different objects at the same time.

Okay, so I’m really excited about this! As this thing gets closer, the ESA’s JUICE probe is going to be watching from about 125 million miles away. I’m hoping it’ll show us if it falls apart like a comet, or if it does something totally weird and new. It’s going to be awesome to see what happens!

Throughout November and December, astronomers using ground-based telescopes will observe comet 3I/ATLAS to see if it breaks apart like a typical comet or if it releases smaller probes, suggesting it might be an artificial object.

The Earth has “no plan” if 3I/ATLAS is a hostile alien threat

Loeb told TopMob that humanity is dangerously unprepared for a first contact scenario.

To my knowledge, we don’t have any established procedures for dealing with the discovery of working alien technology close to Earth,” he cautioned. “Finding something like that so near us demands immediate action, as it could be a serious and immediate danger.”

Although NASA is responsible for monitoring large asteroids at the direction of Congress, Harvard professor Avi Loeb argues that potential alien technology would be much harder to anticipate, and we haven’t prepared for that possibility.

I was really fascinated to hear that a researcher has sent a proposal to the UN! Basically, they’re suggesting we create a group of experts to figure out how to deal with any dangers that might come from objects traveling between stars. It’s a bit sci-fi, but it makes sense to be prepared, right?

This warning follows recent reports of possible alien discoveries, including NASA’s announcement of compelling evidence suggesting life may have existed on Mars in the past.

We’ll find out by Halloween if the mysterious space object 3I/ATLAS is, as some speculate, an alien spacecraft. Hopefully, if it *is* from another world, they arrive with peaceful intentions, because Earth isn’t ready for anything else.
