As a devoted cinemaniac and longtime fan of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey,” I was deeply saddened to learn that this beloved franchise may be coming to an end after its current season, which airs until August 4. The recent watch party at Rails Steakhouse in Towaco, N.J., where the cast gathered to watch the finale without the presence of executive producer Andy Cohen, was a clear indication of the toxic split within this once-unified group.
As a long-time fan of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey,” I was both intrigued and saddened by the news that this beloved reality show may be coming to an end. This past Monday, July 15, I watched as the irrevocably fractured cast members gathered at Rails Steakhouse in Towaco, N.J., not for a reunion, but for a watch party of sorts.
On Mondays, the caucus stood out for being unique in numerous aspects as no other “Real Housewives” season, except for the turbulent 13th season of “The Real Housewives of New York City” in 2021, missed holding a reunion. Additionally, Cohen was absent, an unusual occurrence since he’s been present at every reunion since Bravo launched the hit franchise with “The Real Housewives of Orange County” back in 2006.
Instead, two groups from the cast viewed the finale in separate rooms. Anyone who has watched the the tortured past few seasons of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” can imagine what the split was, but yes, the groups were divided between sisters-in-law Teresa Giudice and Melissa Gorga. Team Teresa comprised full-time cast member and loyal collaborator, Jennifer Aydin, along with Giudice’s former enemy-turned-inexplicable-ally, Jackie Goldschneider (in a “friend” role this season).
Dolores Catania, one of the show’s cast members, managed to stay neutral despite the chaos, moving back and forth between the two spaces.
In the second room, I found myself surrounded by Gorga, Margaret Josephs, Rachel Fuda, Danielle Cabral, and Jennifer Fessler. With the exception of Fessler, these women have long-standing feuds with Giudice’s family, and I can confirm that she doesn’t hold them in high regard either. Josephs has publicly accused Giudice’s husband, Luis Ruelas, of threatening her son during work hours. While Ruelas denies this allegation, it’s clear that tensions between the two families run deep. As for Fuda and I, our issues primarily stem from an incident in which Giudice publicly labeled Fuda’s husband, John, as a former drug dealer during the May 5 season premiere. In response, John took to Instagram to issue a press release, stating his dedication to overcoming past mistakes and refusing to be defined by them. Regarding Cabral, her beef seems to primarily involve Aydin rather than Giudice. The two had a physical altercation during the June 23 episode.
On August 11, which is the Sunday after the season finale, the watch party will be broadcast as a unique episode. The number of episodes to be aired has yet to be determined.
As a movie reviewer, I’d say: In the world of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey,” the future remains uncertain. Will we witness a complete makeover like “The Real Housewives of New York City” experienced after a rocky Season 13? Or will a few existing cast members lead the charge, as recently seen with “The Real Housewives of Atlanta”? Andy Cohen, the show’s creator and executive producer, has made it clear that any decisions about the future won’t be made until the current season concludes.
As a long-time fan of the Real Housewives franchise, I must admit that the Season 14 premiere left me intrigued and somewhat puzzled. I was taken aback when the episode began with a flash-forward showing a solemn Catania sitting alone at Rails, surrounded by shattered glass and an ominous atmosphere. The network’s announcement that there would be no reunion for this cast added to the intrigue, as rumors swirled about what could have possibly transpired during their finale dinner.
Despite this turn of events, it’s a disappointing outcome for the Gorga-Giudice family. When “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” first aired in May 2009, Teresa Giudice quickly stood out as one of the most memorable housewives, weathering prison time, bankruptcy, divorce, and remarriage. Melissa Gorga joined the cast in Season 3, and tensions between her husband, Joe, and Teresa flared up right away. Despite their repeated attempts to mend their relationship throughout the years, they were unable to do so by the end of Season 13. Last season’s reunion saw Giudice calling for Gorga’s removal from the show, which Bravo chose not to grant.
During Season 14, the two women managed to coexist with minimal conflict, but the deep-rooted issues plaguing “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” became unbearable for Bravo to ignore.
