Ironically, ‘How to Die Alone’ Star Conrad Ricamora Met His Husband While Filming the Series About Searching for Love and Combating Loneliness

As a seasoned cinephile with a soft spot for heartwarming tales of love and self-discovery, I find myself captivated by the story of Conrad Ricamora and his journey that led him to meet his husband, Peter Wesley Jensen. The serendipitous encounter on the set of “How to Die Alone,” a Hulu comedy series that delves into themes of love and loneliness, is a testament to the power of fate and modern technology (Hinge, in this case).

Conrad Ricamora is part of the cast for “How to Die Alone,” a fresh comedy series on Hulu by Natasha Rothwell, which delves into themes of love and solitude.

Interestingly, Ricamora crossed paths with his spouse, Peter Wesley Jensen, during the filming of a show in Toronto, after connecting on Hinge. Their first encounter took place at Ruby Soho for their initial date. The “How to Get Away with Murder” actor remembers showing up slightly ahead of schedule and being requested for a photograph by a gathering of admirers.

As that situation unfolded, he approached them and casually asked, ‘By chance, do you know each other?’ According to Ricamora, this was their unusual first interaction. It was certainly an amusing and unconventional way to meet, but he felt instantly that he had found his match.

In July 2023, they got married. Ricamora revealed this tale to EbMaster during the television series premiere held in Los Angeles on Wednesday evening.

After the red carpet event, Ricamora shared about their romance on Instagram, posting a picture of them at the premiere. “During my first week filming HTDahulu in Toronto, I went on a date from Hinge that transformed my life,” he wrote. “It’s quite unreal to now be attending the premiere of a show called HOW TO DIE ALONE, about two years later, as the Ricamora-Jensens. 🥰

Titled “Mel (Rothwell)”, this series is centered around Rothwell’s character, Mel, who is a struggling, overweight Black employee at JFK airport with no romantic experiences and seemingly lost dreams. However, an unexpected near-death experience propels her on an adventure to break free from her stagnant life and start living passionately, using whatever means she has available.

In addition to the main actors, we have KeiLyn Durrel Jones (from “The Other Two”), Jocko Sims (known for “New Amsterdam”), Michelle McLeod (“Women Talking”) and Jaylee Hamidi (“Supernatural”) joining the team.

For over a decade, Ricamora has aspired to collaborate with Rothwell, as he shared. “She’s incredibly collaborative and genuinely open,” Ricamora expressed. “Natasha infuses a spirit of play into everything she does, which is felt throughout the production.

Rothwell shared that she approaches her work on set with compassion and elegance, and revealed that “How to Die Alone” is a deeply personal project she’s dedicated nearly eight years to developing.

Rothwell expressed that vulnerability and open communication seem to be the remedy for solitude. As such, he aimed to create a production that resonated with this sentiment.

Jaylee Hamidi, who portrays Ally in the show, praised Rothwell for being an engaging leader to collaborate with. She emphasized the showrunner’s extensive expertise, knack for handling various situations and friendly demeanor as qualities that significantly improved the cast’s on-set experience.

Vera Santamaria, one of the co-showrunners and executive producers, referred to “How to Die Alone” as a series that will not only make viewers laugh but also resonate deeply with them even after they’ve finished watching.

Rothwell stated, “I wrote (Mel) as a means to convey and showcase the rich array of emotions that frequently arise for a plus-sized woman in Hollywood. I aimed to create a character who was complex, with depth and layers.
