The animated series Invincible has updated some character details, like their races, when adapting the comic book. However, the show hasn’t changed any of the big story events or when they happen in the overall timeline.
Everything shifted in Season 4, Episode 6, “You Look Horrible,” when Nolan told Mark—after he woke up from his coma—that only “almost two months” had passed. This is a big change from the comic books, where Mark’s recovery took much longer, meaning he’ll be back on Earth much sooner than readers anticipated.
The animated series covers the Viltrumite War much faster than the original comics. This quicker pace could change how certain stories develop, potentially impacting things like Nolan’s efforts to make amends with Debbie for his past actions as Omni-Man.
Timeline of the Viltrumite War
How Long Was Mark Away From Earth?
The Invincible comics don’t explain everything directly, but they do reveal some key details. When Mark met up with Eve again – after her powers stabilized – he told her he was sorry for being gone from Earth for “10 months” and that he’d been “in a coma for much of the war.”

It’s still unclear exactly how long Mark has been off Earth throughout Season 4, but current evidence suggests his time away won’t be as extensive as initially thought.
How Long Was Mark’s Recovery?
The comic books don’t specify how long it took Mark to heal, unlike the TV series. They only mention it was over four months, based on numerous discussions Nolan had with Oliver.
Following Mark’s battle with Conquest (issue #73), Nolan initially predicted a recovery time of several months. After nearly a month, he updated Oliver, suggesting a few more months would be needed. This was already longer than Mark’s previous coma, which lasted almost two months. However, with another jump forward in the story, Nolan then stated Mark should be fully recovered in just about a month.

The phrase “or so” is important because the story jumps forward in time, shown by Zack Thompson’s character, Tech Jacket, gradually growing a beard. Nolan even mentions to Oliver that he’s become more powerful over the past month.
In the comic books, Mark needed around four months to heal. However, considering the vast distances of space travel, it seems he was actually unconscious for a much longer period.
How Long is Space Travel?
It’s not known exactly how long a trip from Earth to Talescria usually takes, but in issue #77, Nolan estimated it would take about a week to return in the Coalition’s fastest ship. He also said it would take considerably longer for the rest of the Coalition’s fleet to make the journey.
I was really surprised when General Telia said it would take about two weeks to get to Talescria from Earth! But honestly, it makes sense when you remember they were traveling on that ship. It’s been pretty clear all season that it’s the slowest, most unreliable vessel in the entire Coalition fleet, so two weeks feels… generous, actually.

In the Invincible comics, travel between planets is often quite fast. For example, after uncovering a spy in issue #75, the Coalition traveled from Talescria to Viltrum in just three days. To illustrate further, it took six days to travel from Earth to Thraxa in issue #25 using a Thraxan ship – the same amount of time it took Mark to make the journey in the main storyline.
Mark’s time away from Earth shouldn’t be significantly affected by space travel. Based on the comics, traveling between Earth and Talescria would likely take no more than two weeks total, and adding the three-day trip to Viltrum, the entire journey would be around a month.
Final Verdict
Mark was only unavailable or delayed once before, and that was after a near-fatal encounter with Thragg, following the destruction of the Viltrumite home planet. As Allen mentioned in issue #76, Mark remained unconscious for “two weeks.”
To make the comic book storyline work, Mark could only have been in a coma for about eight months. The characters were constantly active, and considering how fast space travel is in both the comics and the show, this timeframe is the only one that logically fits.
However, Nolan specifically stated that Mark was only unconscious for “almost two months,” which greatly reduces the amount of time he was gone from Earth. Unless the show adds significant travel time to Viltrum or extends Mark’s recovery from his fight with Thragg in the next two episodes, he’ll only have been away for about four months by the season’s end.
This event happens six months before it’s shown in the comics, and could significantly change several ongoing storylines on Earth, especially considering it’s the largest time jump in the show since its third season.
How Could This Affect Omni-Man’s Relationship with Debbie?
While Mark and Nolan were off-planet for ten months, a major development happened back on Earth: Debbie ended her relationship with Paul. When readers see Debbie again in issue #78, she’s on the phone with Paul, coldly telling him to collect his belongings and stating she wants nothing left of him or their relationship in her home.

Debbie ended things with Paul because being with him didn’t feel right anymore, especially after reconnecting with Nolan. Paul was surprised to learn they’d even been dating. Nolan then pointed out, rather boastfully, that Debbie couldn’t continue the relationship once she’d seen him again – a line of dialogue very unlike the Nolan from the cartoon series.
Considering how quickly and unexpectedly Debbie and Paul reunited, it’s clear the show will handle their future relationship very differently than the original story. It seems unlikely Debbie would simply end things with Paul without it being shown on screen, particularly after only four months and considering how much more developed Paul’s character is compared to his comic book counterpart.
To show the four-month time skip, the show might have her living with Paul in their new home, having already sold her previous one. The extra six months could also allow for a more believable reconciliation between Nolan and Debbie, while still showing Nolan working to become a better person.
