International Oscar Race: Latvia Submits Annecy Award Winner ‘Flow’

As someone who has always cherished the magic of animation and the resilience of storytelling, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of pride and excitement at the news that Gints Zilbalodis’ “Flow” has been selected as Latvia’s entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.

At the 97th Academy Awards, Latvia chose “Flow” by Gints Zilbalodis as their submission for the Best International Feature category. This animated film first appeared at the Un Certain Regard segment of the Cannes Film Festival and took home four awards at Annecy.

The movie, which was obtained by Sideshow and Janus Films from Cannes, is scheduled for a cinema release this year.

In Annecy, the film “Flow” was honored with the Audience Choice Award, the Jury Prize, a unique award for exceptional original music, and the Gan Foundation Award for Distribution. It is set to be shown at the Toronto Film Festival within the upcoming month.

In the aftermath of a massive flood, a brave cat embarks on a journey, with “Flow” trailing behind. This cat joins forces with an adventurous capybara, a spirited lemur, a feathered companion, and a resilient dog to navigate a makeshift boat in their quest for dry ground. Their survival hinges on trust, courage, and quick thinking as they face the challenges of a world that has been submerged.

The movie was jointly penned by Zilbalodis and Matiss Kaza. Its music was composed by both Zilbalodis and Rihards Zalupe. It was also produced by Zilbalodis and Kaza, along with Ron Dyens and Gregory Zalcman.

Zilbalodis’ “Away” won the Contrechamp Award for Best Film at Annecy in 2019.

As a devoted cinephile, I’m always excited about films hailing from diverse corners of the globe, and this time, it’s Latvia’s turn! The movie that represents Latvia in international film festivals is carefully chosen by a distinguished panel of film industry experts, known as the Latvian Selection Committee. This esteemed group is assembled by the National Film Center to ensure that only the finest cinematic gems from our country are showcased on global screens.

The 97th Academy Awards will take place on March 2. Nominations will be revealed on Jan. 17.
