Inside the Carter Family: Fame, Tragedy, and the Dark Side of Celebrity

For the very first time, Angel Carter Conrad will have a conversation with her brother Nick Carter in the process of creating her forthcoming documentary titled “The Carters: It’s Painful to Love You.

In the latest Paramount+ documentary trailer, Angel Carter, Aaron Carter’s twin sister, narrates their family’s journey filled with various triumphs and tribulations. From the rise of Nick’s band, the Backstreet Boys, and Aaron’s solo career success to the heartbreaking loss of three siblings: Leslie (who died from an apparent overdose in 2012), Aaron (who tragically drowned accidentally in 2022), and Bobbie Jean (who also passed away due to an accidental overdose in 2023).

This two-part documentary, titled “Intimate Conversations with the Carter Siblings,” is produced by See It Now Studios and Candle True Stories, under the guidance of director Soleil Moon Frye. It delves into deep discussions between Angel and Nick Carter, the last surviving members of their family, as they explore their intricate childhood and the heart-wrenching events that shaped their lives. Additionally, it includes previously unseen home videos, photos, audio recordings, and private text messages.

As a movie reviewer, I’d rephrase it like this: “In one scene, the character’s mother, portrayed as Jane, seemingly warns, ‘It’s best to tell the truth before retiring for the night, or you might meet an untimely end in your slumber.’ Later on, the protagonist, Nick, confides in his sister about being the last two remaining family members. He expresses a poignant thought: ‘Our family was torn apart by fame and fortune.’

Audience members will find engaging discussions with the family’s professional acquaintances such as Melissa Joan Hart, Scout Willis, and their long-term manager Lori Knight.

According to the official announcement, “Frye was granted extraordinary privilege to delve into the family’s private records, thereby uncovering the Carter family like never before. This includes their expressions of sorrow and apprehension, as well as their feelings of affection and optimism, which they openly share for the first time.

The Carters: It’s Hard to Love You” is overseen by James Goldston, Steven Baker, Cynthia Childs, Soleil Moon Frye, Susan Zirinsky, and Terence Wrong as executive producers, while it is distributed through Paramount Global Content Distribution. Aysu Saliba and Cara Tortora serve as the show’s senior producers.
