Indonesia’s JAFF Returns for 20th Edition, Expands Market Component

As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that this year, Indonesia’s beloved Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival (JAFF) is celebrating its 20th anniversary! The festivities will take place from November 29th to December 6th, right in the heart of Yogyakarta.

But that’s not all! For the second year running, we have the JAFF Market component, which will run from November 29th to December 1st. This market is a fantastic opportunity for filmmakers and industry professionals to connect, network, and learn from each other. So, mark your calendars, fellow cinephiles! It’s going to be an unforgettable celebration of Asian cinema.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I was thrilled to be part of the grand opening of the market in 2024, an event that truly lived up to expectations. With a whopping 151 booths set up and over 6,700 participants – producers, distributors, investors, and streaming platforms – flocking to it, the atmosphere was electric. The main festival itself, spanning eight days, managed to captivate no less than 24,462 visitors, a testament to its magnetic allure.

This year, two pivotal instances make the Jakarta International Film Festival (JAFF) particularly noteworthy: the commemoration of its 20th anniversary and the ongoing second edition of the JAFF Market, which built on its impressive debut last year. These occasions will be leveraged to bolster JAFF’s role in fostering Indonesia’s cultural and film industry. We are planning a grand event to honor the festival’s two-decade-long journey, while this year’s JAFF Market will offer more opportunities for exhibitors and global film industry players. This was stated by Ifa Isfansyah, director of JAFF and chair of JAFF Market.

The announcement was made as Indonesian cinema reached unprecedented success, with domestic films accounting for 65% of the market and over 80 million theater visits recorded in 2024. Closing the festival in 2024 was the blockbuster movie “A Brother and 7 Siblings,” which became a box office sensation.

Notable individuals from the film industry have consistently shown interest in JAFF. These include directors such as Tsai Ming-liang, founder of the Busan International Film Festival Kim Dong-ho, Julien Rejl who leads the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes, and Kristy Matheson, director of the BFI London Film Festival.

The market sector for Indonesian films has garnered significant global recognition. For quite some time now, we’ve been enthralled by Indonesian cinema. A major goal for Barunson E&A is to work with partners who align with our ambition of showcasing exceptional Indonesian movies across both domestic and international markets. JAFF Market serves as a unified stage that brings together influential figures in the industry, providing top-notch programs to help grasp the business and market trends of Indonesian cinema. This was expressed by Choi Yoonhee, CEO of Korean sales and production company Barunson E&A.

2024 festival juror and attendee Anthony Chen, a filmmaker, remarked on the region’s potential: “I have collaborated as a co-producer on numerous Indonesian films and have witnessed at a distance the powerful vitality emanating from this nation. This is what made me eager to appreciate Indonesian films from the viewpoint of local spectators and to uncover fresh talents from a region that appears to offer endless opportunities.”

Or, in a more informal tone:

Festival juror and attendee Anthony Chen, a filmmaker, couldn’t help but notice the potential in this region: “I’ve co-produced several Indonesian films, and I’ve seen from a distance the amazing energy coming out of this country. That’s why I was pumped to see Indonesian movies through local eyes and discover new talents from a place that seems like it could go on forever with possibilities.

The JAFF Festival sets itself apart as the sole cinematic event in Indonesia that brings together prominent figures from the entertainment industry such as Netflix, Vidio, MD Entertainment, Miles Films, and Visinema. Furthermore, it fosters collaborations with over 100 local film communities scattered throughout Indonesia’s islands.

Starting March 1st, you can submit your films for the 20th edition of JAFF. Registration for market booths will begin on July 17th.
