Indonesian Horror Film ‘Perewangan’ Picked Up by EST N8

As a film enthusiast who has traveled the globe in search of the most chilling and captivating horror films, I can confidently say that I am thrilled about the rising demand for Indonesian horror with the release of “Perewangan.” Having traversed the labyrinthine streets of Jakarta and immersed myself in the rich culture of Indonesia, I have a soft spot for the unique blend of superstition and modernity that permeates their film industry.

In response to an increasing interest in Indonesian horror movies, the U.S.-Thai film sales company EST N8 has acquired the rights for “Perewangan,” a film set to debut in Indonesian cinemas this month.

In the story “Perewangan,” the characters Maya and Wulan grapple with an eerie, otherworldly dread as their prosperous family enterprise starts to collapse. This unfortunate turn of events compels them to uncover the chilling presence responsible for their hardships.

The movie is created by director Awi Suryadi, renowned for his projects like “KKN Di Desa Penari,” which holds the record as the highest-earning Indonesian film ever, and the “Danur” series. Leading the cast are Davina Karamoy, Restu Triandy, and well-known musician Shanty.

Perewangan is a production of MD Pictures, which is a subsidiary of MD Entertainment, and is part of the extensive film and television empire led by Manoj Punjabi in Indonesia. This conglomerate has put out more than 190 films, including “KKN Di Desa Penari.

Beyond Perewangan, EST N8’s market slate for Busan also comprises: the time-loop thriller “30 Minutes,” which is currently in production; Kongkiat Komesiri’s upcoming thriller “Delivery Man”; the Korean action film “Mash Ville,” which won the Fantasia Best Director Award; the horror thriller “Chabak,” a Netflix Korea top-ranker produced by Tiger Yeongseop Kim; and the historical drama from Nepal, “Gurkha Warrior.

In 2022, Jaeson Ma and Eric Tu established EST Studios, a company focusing on Asian content spanning various genres. They aim to finance, produce, and represent approximately 15 projects each year. On the other hand, N8, based in Thailand, was founded by Kris Eiamsakulrat and Rachel Wu. Last year, N8 entered into a partnership with GDH559, a leading Thai studio, to co-produce a collection of Thai thriller and horror films targeting a global audience.

Jaeson Ma, EST Studios’ chairperson, expressed his excitement about the partnership with MD Entertainment on ‘Perewangan’, stating that it signifies a thrilling development in horror filmmaking. He emphasized their commitment to creating fresh and mesmerizing narratives, and believes Awi Suryadi’s exceptional skills will take this project to unprecedented levels.
