The Indonesian animation movie “Jumbo” has broken local box office records, making it the top-earning Indonesian animated film ever, as it surpassed 1 million ticket sales within only seven days of its theatrical release.
The Visinema Studios film that debuted on March 31 broke a long-standing record set by “Si Juki The Movie: Last Day” in 2017, which had garnered 642,312 admissions and stood unchallenged for eight years.
The movie chronicles the journey of Don, a young, frequently underestimated individual, who aims to showcase a stage play in a talent contest, inspired by an cherished fairy tale book he inherited from his deceased parents. However, his ambitions are thwarted when a tormentor snatches the book. In an unforeseen turn of events, Don encounters a mysterious youngster who needs assistance to be reunited with her long-lost family.
Anggia Kharisma, producer of ‘Jumbo,’ stated that the sales figures aren’t merely about ticket earnings; they symbolize love, optimism, and faith from the public towards our home-grown narratives. Witnessing such an emotional response from Indonesian viewers gives significance to all the hurdles we’ve overcome in the past five years.
The exceptional achievement of ‘Jumbo’ is particularly notable given that more than half of the local movie theater releases consist of horror films. However, this film stands out as it flourishes through its heartwarming narrative centered around themes such as warmth, hope, and connection.
The movie titled ‘Jumbo’ gained significant organic popularity on social platforms. A group of supporters, who call themselves ‘Jumbo’s Freedom Blast’, have been creating viral memes and posts that kept the movie atop trends on X and TikTok for several days.
After achieving domestic acclaim, the movie is set to broaden its horizons internationally, starting in June with theater showings in Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei Darussalam. The animated production, helmed by Ryan Adriandhy, will additionally be screened in various regions of Asia and Europe, such as Russia, Ukraine, the Baltic countries, and numerous Central Asian nations.
