In 2025, an unexpected indie game titled Blue Prince has surpassed all other critically acclaimed games to date. This new release from Dogubomb and publisher Raw Fury outperformed the previous leader, Split Fiction, by a single point on both Metacritic and OpenCritic. If you’re unfamiliar with this buzzworthy indie game, you might be curious about what earned it such high praise and how to get your hands on it.
Blue Prince suddenly becomes the highest reviewed game of 2025 so far
It seems that for more than eight years now, the game titled “Blue Prince” has been under development. This intriguing title is classified as an atmospheric, architectural rogue-lite adventure. In this game, players assume the role of a character who has recently inherited a puzzling mansion with 45 distinct rooms. As you venture through the mansion, you decide which rooms to explore next, effectively shaping the layout of the mansion as you delve deeper into its mysteries. The ultimate objective appears to be reaching the legendary 46th room.
In a remarkable turn of events, Dogubomb, the studio known for indie puzzle adventures, has launched its inaugural game to a tremendous amount of positive reviews. What makes this even more astounding is that it surpassed heavyweight titles like Split Fiction, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 in critical scores. The publisher behind this success, Raw Fury, has built a strong reputation within the indie gaming scene. They’ve previously published notable games such as the tactical game Knights in Tight Spaces released this year, the popular pachinko rogue-like Ballionaire from last year, and the upcoming deckbuilding creature-collector Moonstone Island set for 2023 release.
As a fervent admirer, I’d like to point out the intriguing dual meaning in the title “Blue Prince“. On one side, I’m the heir to this enigmatic dwelling, but on the other, I’m also mapping out its layout, much akin to an architect sketching blueprints for a building. During the Day of the Devs Game Awards showcase in December, we learned that the house spans five rooms across and nine rooms deep. Dogubomb director Tonda Ros teased: “the deeper you delve, the more secrets you’ll uncover. The more secrets you uncover, the deeper still you’ll delve“. The arrangement of each room infuses a strategic element into this captivating first-person puzzle game. With every passing day, I’m learning more about how to navigate this mystery and hopefully, get closer to solving it.
The much-anticipated game, Blue Prince, is going to grace both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S starting from this Thursday, April 10th. Not just on their respective platforms, but also via Steam for PC users. To sweeten the deal even more, upon its public release, you can access it through both Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus subscription services. This means that there are multiple paths to dive into this intriguing indie game!
