With five Indiana Jones movies already made, Kathleen Kennedy has finally said whether Harrison Ford will return as the famous character in a sixth film. This question has been on fans’ minds, especially since the latest movie, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, didn’t perform as well as expected and received the lowest ratings of any film in the series.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Kathleen Kennedy, the former president of Lucasfilm, discussed the future of the Indiana Jones movies. While she stated the franchise “will never be done,” Lucasfilm doesn’t have plans to make another film at this time.
Kathleen Kennedy explained that the future of the Indiana Jones franchise rests with those who created it – herself, Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall, Harrison Ford, and George Lucas. Despite the recent film, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, not performing well in theaters, she stated she has no regrets about its release.
Harrison Ford was eager to reprise his role in another Indiana Jones film, hoping to avoid ending the series with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Fortunately, Kennedy agreed, and it was the correct decision to give him that chance.
I don’t regret making another Indiana Jones film. Harrison Ford really wanted to continue the series and didn’t want it to end with the fourth movie, so we gave him that opportunity. I believe it was the right decision, as he was eager to make that film. While I don’t think Indiana Jones will ever truly be over, there’s currently no interest in making another one. However, these films are classics, and the character will live on.
It’s impossible to predict the future, but the original members – Steven, Frank, myself, Harrison, and George – are all still around. That means we collectively decide if we want to create anything new.
The first three Indiana Jones movies came out between 1981 and 1989, while Harrison Ford was also playing Han Solo in Star Wars. Both franchises were created by George Lucas.
The Indiana Jones films were both popular with audiences and critically well-received – Raiders of the Lost Ark currently has a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. They also garnered numerous Academy Awards, including wins for Film Editing, Production Design, Sound, and Visual Effects.
After a TV series in the 1990s called The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, the Indiana Jones movies hadn’t been made for several years. The franchise returned in 2008 with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, bringing back Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones and Steven Spielberg as director.
Despite generally positive reviews, Crystal Skull earned $786 million, making it the most financially successful Indiana Jones movie. However, it received a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the same as Temple of Doom, which at the time was the lowest score for any film in the Indiana Jones series.
When Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, they focused on bringing back Star Wars, but also wanted to revisit Indiana Jones. Unfortunately, the latest film, Dial of Destiny, directed by James Mangold, didn’t perform well in theaters, earning only $384 million. It also received a relatively low score of 71% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Both Steven Spielberg and Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney, have talked about wanting to make more Indiana Jones movies or shows. However, Harrison Ford has said he’s done playing the character, and there are no intentions to find another actor to take over the role. This means any future stories would need to center around new characters.
Disney announced plans for a new TV show in 2022, but later canceled the project after a few months.
It’s unclear what Disney plans to do with the Indiana Jones franchise following recent statements from Kennedy. While Disney and the director initially presented The Dial of Destiny as the last film, they now appear to be open to the possibility of making another, Indiana Jones 6.
It’s unclear if future installments will come in the form of movies or another TV series, but according to Kennedy, the world of Indiana Jones will continue indefinitely – it will “never be done.”
