Indian King of Comedy Kapil Sharma, Star of Busan Film ‘Zwigato,’ Takes on Global Streaming With Hit Netflix Show (EXCLUSIVE)

As a longtime connoisseur of laughter and entertainment, I must say, Kapil Sharma‘s transition from the small screen to the global giant that is Netflix with “The Great Indian Kapil Show” has been nothing short of phenomenal. The man knows how to make people laugh, and he’s done it consistently for years now, making him a true comedy legend in India.

The popular Indian comedian, Kapil Sharma, known for his role in the 2022 film “Zwigato” selected for Nandita Das’ Busan festival, has expanded his long-running TV series to Netflix. Now, “The Global Indian Kapil Show” is entertaining viewers around the world.

From 2016 to 2023, “The Kapil Sharma Show” graced Sony Entertainment Television India’s airwaves. The move to stream it on Netflix wasn’t forced but rather a natural progression. As Kapil Sharma puts it, Netflix approached him with the suggestion of bringing his beloved show to their platform, where it had already found success on TV for years. He was intrigued by this idea and decided why not? After all, Netflix is a global giant that would offer an opportunity to reach a larger audience and garner international recognition.

Although our show is primarily designed for Hindi-speaking viewers, its international reception has been quite impressive. “It’s understandable that the viewing experience might be different for those watching with subtitles,” Sharma explains, “but the global feedback we’ve received has been exceptional. When our show debuted, it wasn’t just popular in India, but also trended in countries such as Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. In fact, Season 1 made history by being the first Indian series to appear on the Global Top 10 TV (non-English) list for four consecutive weeks. The success has continued with Season 2, which has held the top spot in India’s Top 10 TV chart since its release two weeks ago and has also entered the Top 10 in 11 countries.

Kapil Sharma, winner of “The Great Indian Laughter Challenge” Season 3 on Star TV in 2007 and host of “Comedy Nights With Kapil” on Colors TV, admits that writing comedy, particularly for a prolonged series, is no easy task. “Writing comedy is indeed challenging as you must continuously create new topics and fresh jokes,” he explains. “It’s even more difficult when we are working with celebrities on our show, as we have already completed numerous episodes together.” He attributes the show’s enduring quality to his dedicated team. “I feel incredibly blessed and grateful to God for having such a remarkable team,” he says. “My directors, my acting crew, and everyone else are all seasoned professionals in the industry with whom I’ve developed strong friendships over time.

The new season introduces technological enhancements to create a more immersive viewing experience. Visual effects and holograms have been incorporated, with plans to experiment with interactive formats in upcoming episodes. The show is also expanding its character roster, introducing more pop culture-relevant figures alongside familiar faces. To engage with fans directly, Sharma and his castmates are embarking on multi-city tours, including a recent visit to the Attari Wagah Border to meet with Border Security Forces and their families. The guest list for Season 2 includes Saif Ali Khan, NTR Jr, Janhavi Kapoor, the T20 World Cup-winning Indian cricket team and also the cast of “Fabulous Wives vs Bollywood Lives.” The season kicked off with Alia Bhatt, Karan Johar, Vasan Bala and Vedang Raina for their upcoming film “Jigra.”

Although comedy is his primary strength, Sharma has dabbled in dramatic performances, notably in the film “Zwigato.” He expresses a desire for more leading roles in films, but post the release of ‘Zwigato,’ he’s been offered only more serious scripts. Despite wanting to exhibit his serious side, he doesn’t wish to overemphasize it. With a chuckle, he mentions that he prefers comedy films more, but this doesn’t mean he wouldn’t accept a serious role. If an exceptional script crosses his path, he would gladly accept it.
