As a seasoned gamer with a keen eye for industry insights, I can confidently say that yesterday’s reveal of The Witcher 4 during The Game Awards 2024 sent a wave of excitement throughout the gaming community. Being well-versed in the lore and history of The Witcher series, I found it fascinating to learn about the origins of this announcement, which surprisingly dates back to 2020.
Yesterday at The Game Awards 2024, gamers collectively held their breath as CD Project RED unveiled the first trailer for The Witcher 4. The fan-favorite character, Ciri, takes center stage in this highly anticipated sequel. Although it was only officially confirmed yesterday, whispers about its existence began back in 2020. Interestingly enough, our editorial team had already caught wind of the rumors at that time and considered them a joke for April Fools. However, our Polish counterpart knew better and had reported on it as genuine news.
Seems like a joke, but it’s not
Krystian “UV” Smoszna, who was previously editor-in-chief of Gry-Online.pl, had clarified on X that the article published on April 1, while appearing to be an April Fool’s prank, actually held a hidden message.
In 2019, Krystian received confidential info from a reliable yet unknown source about the matter. It was rumored that Ciri’s story had been concluded earlier and this game was supposed to serve as a prequel. However, due to its nature, not much could be done with this information. To add some intrigue, Krystian decided to share it as an April Fool’s Day prank.
At that point in time, there wasn’t much useful we could do with this particular information. Already, rumors about Ciri being the central figure were widespread online. So, additional tidbits from another unidentified source wouldn’t be taken seriously. However, as April Fool’s Day was fast approaching, I concocted a plan: we’d present this info as an absurd prank on April 1st since nobody would buy it otherwise, and surprisingly enough, that turned out to be the case.

Well, I was pretty stoked when I heard rumors about a prequel for The Witcher, but as it turns out, those were just that – rumors. In an exclusive chat with Sebastian Kalemba, the director of the upcoming game, he confirmed that Ciri went through the Trial of Grasses after the events of Wild Hunt. That means the fourth installment is definitely a sequel, not a prequel, and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
Was there any adjustment made to the initial plan, and if so, when did it happen? I’m not certain, but back in 2019, I didn’t have any cause to doubt a colleague who provided details about the prequel.
If you’re wondering why CD Projekt RED selected Ciri as a character, the reasoning behind this decision has previously been clarified by Sebastian Kalemba and detailed in our prior updates.
