Imax Taps Jordan Fischer, Former Netflix and Illumination Executive, as Chief Content Officer

As a seasoned cinephile with decades of experience under my belt, I am thrilled about Jonathan Fischer joining Imax as their Chief Content Officer. His extensive background at Netflix, Illumination Entertainment, New Regency Entertainment, and Universal Pictures, among others, speaks volumes about his expertise in the industry.

Previously with Netflix and Illumination Entertainment, Jonathan Fischer is set to take on the role of Imax’s Chief Content Officer. Known as the go-to format for cinephiles eager to watch big-screen hits such as “Dune: Part Two” and “Oppenheimer,” Imax stated that Fischer will lead their content strategy, encompassing both Hollywood and international films. Additionally, he will aid in expanding the company’s horizons, guiding them as they explore and sometimes create documentaries, concerts, sports events, and other forms of entertainment for their screens.

Fischer will work from our Playa Vista headquarters, with Rich Gelfond, the CEO of Imax, as his direct supervisor.

Imax is expanding its offerings to provide a wider, more varied collection of content to global audiences – over 100 unique, breathtaking experiences spanning Hollywood films, international productions, documentaries, music, sports, and gaming in 2024. This was announced by Gelfond in a statement. ‘Jonathan’s extensive expertise will be invaluable as an increasing number of filmmakers and artists choose to create content for our platform’,” (paraphrased statement)

More recently, Fischer held the position of Vice President for Global Films’ Content Strategy and Analysis at Netflix. In this role, he formulated their approval process and worked closely on talent discussions and deal-making. Before joining Netflix, Fischer was the Chief Operating Officer at both Illumination Entertainment, known for its “Despicable Me” and “Sing” series, and New Regency Entertainment, which produced “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “The Revenant”.

Apart from his acting career, Fischer held key positions such as the president of Groundswell Productions, the CFO of an autonomous production firm called Intrepid Pictures, and was involved in business development and strategic planning at both Universal Pictures and The Walt Disney Company.

Fischer expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Rich and his exceptional team. He highlighted that IMAX offers an exceptionally immersive entertainment experience, and he’s eager to work with both new and established partners to deliver even more outstanding content to our audience.
