In this current year, it’s me who’s thrilled that Doc re-entered the realm of medical dramas, a genre he left with The Resident ending in 2023. The extraordinary ratings for the premiere clearly showcased an eager audience for the tale of Dr. Amy Larsen, a doctor who suffered memory loss due to an accident. However, a compelling narrative like this could easily lose its momentum without additional elements. Fortunately, the series introduced a captivating love triangle and a character we love to dislike, portrayed by Scott Wolf as Dr. Richard Miller.
As changes in the cast are occurring, I find myself filled with apprehension regarding who may or may not reappear post-Season 1.
Cast Changes For Season 2
The positive update is that two actors from Season 1 will play more significant roles in the upcoming season! According to Deadline, Patrick Walker and Charlotte Fountain-Jardim have been elevated from recurring characters to series regulars. It’s not too shocking that Walker received this promotion since Dr. TJ Coleman began receiving substantial storylines as the second half of the season unfolded. Given his status as a first-year resident, it seems likely that he might stick around at Westside Hospital for some time. (You can catch the series now with a Hulu subscription.)
I’m less convinced that Katie, portrayed by Fountain-Jardim, will play a significant role in Season 2. With much of the action taking place at the hospital and Amy potentially rekindling her workaholic habits, it seems plausible that Katie might take a back seat. However, given her impressive performance in the first season and the unexpected kiss between Amy and Michael towards the end of Season 1, which adds to the family’s existing complications, there could be more drama involving Katie in the upcoming season.
It seems like there’s some positive development regarding TJ, Katie, right? However, the modifications concerning Scott Wolf are causing me a bit of unease.
What About Dr. Richard Miller?
Initially, when Dr. Richard Miller appeared and started blaming Amy for a patient’s death, I was ready to dislike him just like everyone else. However, as the season progressed, it subtly provided insight into the tragic decision that resulted in the patient’s death. Added to this, Scott Wolf’s performance made me develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for Richard’s character. Despite my inclination not to support his attempts to shift blame onto Amy for the man’s death, I found him to be a more intriguing character than I had anticipated at first.
At the conclusion of Season 1, it became clear that more trouble was brewing for Richard when Amy discovered the truth regarding Dixon’s demise and he had to deal with the repercussions of his actions. Although the show didn’t explicitly say so, it seems unlikely that Richard would continue working at Westside Hospital given his current situation, especially if he somehow manages to retain his medical license.
Instead of wondering who is watching the TV series about the memory-losing doctor and her love triangle for authenticity, Scott Wolf was exceptional in Season 1, so I’m ready to accept the unrealistic parts if it means keeping Wolf on board for Season 2. Unfortunately, I can’t predict whether the medical drama will return for another season or not because when I interviewed the showrunners and cast earlier this year, they hadn’t renewed it yet, and even Michael Ecker didn’t reveal any spoilers about future seasons during his interview with TopMob.
I’m not sure if it’s anything to go on, but Scott Wolf did drop an encouraging comment when Fox announced Doc’s renewal for Season 2 on Instagram. He wrote: “🙌🙌🙌👏👏👏🔥🔥❤️” Does that translate to “I’m definitely coming back next season?” Maybe not, but Season 1 had already finished filming by the time episodes were airing on Fox. There’s hope for more of Richard when Doc returns in the fall, especially with the episode count being bumped up to 22.
At the moment, you have the chance to revisit Season 1 on Hulu whenever you like, and keep an eye out for further announcements about Doc. I’m thrilled that the medical drama will be accompanying Season 2 of Murder in a Small Town, so Tuesday nights this fall promise to be filled with high-drama.
