Nathan Fillion’s greatest recognition comes from the Castle TV series, however, that’s not all he’s starred in, and not all he wants to be known for. The last thing he would want to allow is to let typecast himself into a certain type of role or genre of production. So while he appreciates that people love his role in Castle, he doesn’t want him to be just that guy from Castle. He wants to have more to offer, so he chooses diverse roles in diverse genre productions.
But Fillion for many is not just a Castle guy, he’s also a sci-fi guy. That patch has been stuck to him through such productions as Firefly, Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad. Breaking out of a certain frame was certainly helped by his role in The Rookie, which is something of a change. It’s neither sci-fi nor Castle. And which is liked enough that Fillion had a chance to prove himself in it for a long time, showing that he’s not just a Castle or sci-fi guy.
During an interview with GamesRadar, Nathan Fillion talked about how he doesn’t want to be locked into just one genre, and if someone only associates him with one, it means they simply don’t know his other roles. The actor talks about that he has much more to offer.
People who think I’m just in the sci-fi genre are just simply not familiar with my other work. I’ve spent far more time doing everything except for sci-fi! So I’m glad that they watch it and I’m glad they’re a fan, but I then remind them of the three years I spent on a soap opera, the time I’ve spent doing drama, comedy, a sitcom. That’s five and a half years right there! You only got one slice of the pie – it’s an awesome pie! Go have more pie!
But while Fillion doesn’t want to be typecast, that doesn’t mean he plans to start avoiding sci-fi. This is evidenced, for example, by his role in James Gunn’s Superman. The actor simply tries not to play in one genre, and his filmography has more to offer than some fans may think.
In an interview with IGN, the actor said that he wants to do different things and not close himself off to novelty. While one genre may seem safe and comfortable to him, Fillion is not afraid to take on challenges.
There are different kinds of challenges… It’s about telling stories. There’s challenges, they’re just on a different level, and probably more emotional or cerebral. I would hate to have to only do sci-fi, I would hate to have to only do horror. I’d be grateful if I continued to work in horror for the rest of my life. I would be grateful, thank you. I would love to be employed for the rest of my life… But what I would want to do is things that would frighten me, things that would scare me. I’ve never done that before, can I do that, can I show them that I can do it? It becomes about just wanting to be better and wanting to be good.
So Nathan Fillion is a guy of many things.
