IFC Films and Sapan Studio have purchased the rights to show “The Baltimorons,” a fresh comedy directed by Jay Duplass, across the U.S. and Canada. This decision comes after the film’s debut at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival where it received the Audience Award for Narrative Spotlight. IFC Films intends to screen “The Baltimorons” in cinemas later this year.

It’s been over a decade since Jay Duplass last directed a feature film, but during that time he acted on shows like “Transparent” and Michelle Williams’ “Dying for Sex”. His last directorial effort was in 2012 with the movie “The Do-Deca-Pentathlon”.
The television series titled “The Baltimorons” was created by Duplass Brothers Productions, jointly written by Duplass and Michael Strassner. It features the performances of Strassner, Liz Larsen, and Olivia Luccardi. As per the official synopsis, the story revolves around a man named Cliff who, having cracked a tooth on Christmas Eve, embarks on a journey through Baltimore with Didi, his emergency dentist.
The movie titled “The Baltimorons” has been garnering critical acclaim since its premiere at SXSW. In an upbeat critique for EbMaster, Stephen Saito lauded the film as “a delightfully poignant comedy,” implying that it could soon become a popular choice during specific seasons.
Sapan Studios and IFC have teamed up for distributing a number of independent films, such as the critically-acclaimed drama “Ghostlight” from last year and the newly-released “The Luckiest Man in America.
Duplass expressed his gratitude for collaborating with esteemed independent studios IFC Films and Sapan Studio on the release of his first solo directorial project, ‘The Baltimorons.’ The title, while sophisticated, is expected to enhance their reputation,” stated Duplass.
It’s great to have Jay Duplass back as a director, presenting another heartfelt and funny movie that we can’t wait to see. We’re thrilled about our ongoing partnership with the Duplass Brothers for this unique take on romance that promises to capture hearts repeatedly. Additionally, we’re eager to carry on working with Sapan Studio to bring this audience-friendly film to cinemas later in the year.
Working alongside the remarkable Jay Duplass in his captivating movie has been a pure delight,” commented Josh Sapan, the founder of Sapan Studio. “There’s no one more suitable than IFC Films to distribute this award-winning masterpiece to cinemas nationwide.
The show known as ‘The Baltimorons’ is created by David Bonnett Jr., Strassner, Drew Langer, with Jay Duplass, Mark Duplass, Mel Eslyn, and Shuli Harel serving as executive producers.
The agreement was worked out among Kepher-Maat (for IFC Films), Mark Simon (Sapan Studio), Christine Hsu (CAA), and Josh & Dan Braun (Submarine) acting as representatives for the filmmakers.
