The movie lineup for 2026 includes a welcome return for Star Wars fans. It’s been more than five years since a Star Wars film was in theaters – the last one was The Rise of Skywalker. This year, The Mandalorian and Grogu will bring the popular TV series to the big screen, and in 2027, a brand new Star Wars adventure, Star Wars: Starfighter, will follow.
The upcoming film will feature Ryan Gosling and be directed by Shawn Levy. Having recently finished his work on the popular series Stranger Things as a producer and director, Levy shared with The Hollywood Reporter that the show actually helped prepare him for this new movie. He realized that even with large-scale productions, the heart of a story often lies in the small details. He went on to explain…
Working on Stranger Things taught me that it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the pressure of big franchises. But focusing on that will lead you astray. What really matters is staying grounded in the characters, themes, and relationships you’re building on screen. Like Stranger Things, and now with Star Wars, there’s a lot of spectacle and adventure – more than I’ve ever experienced in my career. However, the key is to keep the story focused on a human level, with characters that feel real. If I can strike that balance between grand scale and intimate moments, like the Duffer Brothers did with Stranger Things, I believe I can create a Star Wars adventure that fans will truly enjoy.
It’s been a while since Star Wars films have been shown in theaters, and many have tried to revive the series, but it remains one of the most successful franchises of all time. It’s easy to understand why a director might feel pressure taking on such a project. There are high expectations from fans, who want a movie that lives up to the legacy of past blockbusters, and also from the studio, which is hoping for a major financial success.

As a huge movie fan, I think Shawn Levy has a real advantage with this Star Wars project. It’s not bogged down by years of TV backstory like some other entries, and from what I understand, it’s not directly tied into the main saga. That’s a good thing! It’s a fresh start – a completely standalone story with new faces and a brand new adventure in that galaxy far, far away. It feels like a risk, but one that could really pay off.
This new project gives Levy the chance to focus on a more intimate story, unlike other Star Wars films, such as the upcoming movie with Daisy Ridley which needs to continue Rey’s storyline and consider the larger franchise. However, Levy is probably right that the most important thing for both projects is keeping the story focused on relatable characters and a compelling narrative. If the movie delivers on that, fans will likely be pleased.
