Ian McKellen Spoils Big ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Plot Detail

Ian McKellen may have accidentally revealed a detail about the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, and it sounds incredible. At 86, he’s the oldest actor to return to a Marvel role, having first played Magneto in X-Men 26 years ago and last appearing in X-Men: Days of Future Past 12 years ago. Throughout the X-Men movies, Magneto has demonstrated impressive feats of strength, like lifting large structures. But it seems the directors of Avengers: Doomsday are planning something even bigger.

In a recent interview with Jake’s Takes, Ian McKellen talked about his experience filming Avengers: Doomsday. He described it as enjoyable working alongside the younger cast members, who were very self-assured given their roles in other films. McKellen and Patrick Stewart felt like seasoned veterans coming onto the set, but the younger actors were respectful and made them feel comfortable. During the interview, McKellen accidentally revealed details about a potentially important action sequence in the movie.

“I did destroy New Jersey the other day. Oh, I probably shouldn’t have said that.”

Why is Magneto Destroying New Jersey?

20th Century Pictures

Ian McKellen isn’t the only actor who’s accidentally shared details about the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. Alan Cumming previously revealed his Nightcrawler will battle Pedro Pascal’s Mister Fantastic, and Kelsey Grammer suggested his Beast will also interact with Pascal’s character. The trailer focusing on the X-Men might give fans a better look at how McKellen’s Magneto causes destruction in New Jersey within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The latest trailer for the X-Men features Cyclops firing his optic blast amidst the wreckage of the Xavier Institute, while being surrounded by Sentinels. There’s been speculation that Doctor Doom is the one controlling these Sentinels, and that Magneto will attempt to oppose him, potentially even using the state of New Jersey as a battlefield. The story may begin with Magneto in New Jersey, causing destruction but ultimately failing to defeat Doom. This could lead him to seek assistance from his former ally, Professor X, in Upstate New York, which would explain the Sentinel attack seen in the trailer. With so many possible conflicts brewing in Avengers: Doomsday, many fans are eager to see a confrontation between Magneto and Doctor Doom, two of Marvel’s most iconic villains.

The mention of New Jersey could be important. In the main Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, it’s the home of Kamala Khan, also known as Ms. Marvel – one of the first mutants identified in the MCU – and also where the events of WandaVision took place. This raises the possibility that Magneto could enter the MCU and travel to New Jersey to find Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. The Scarlet Witch. In the Marvel comics, Magneto was Wanda’s father until December 2014, just before the Avengers: Age of Ultron movie. If Magneto comes looking for a different version of his daughter, he might destroy Westview, leading to a clash with the MCU heroes who try to stop him. This could mean fans might see the Avengers battling not only Doctor Doom, but also Magneto.
